About the job

Requirements
  • Experience in product management, solutions engineering, or a hybrid technical role, with a track record of shipping solutions rather than only designing or coordinating them.
  • Demonstrated ability to use modern AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, Replit, Cursor, or similar tools to build functional software independently.
  • Ability to tackle complex problems and ambiguity using first-principles thinking to make progress.
  • Ability to think in systems, understanding both technical interactions such as composability, dependencies, and governance, and experiential interactions such as consistency, coherence, and overall product feel.
  • Strong product and design judgment, including distinguishing technically correct solutions from genuinely good ones and maintaining a coherent plugin ecosystem.
  • Rapid iteration instinct, building and putting real solutions in front of users, shipping quickly, and iterating with an eye toward broader scalability.
  • Ability to operate across technical and non-technical audiences, including writing plugin specifications for coding agents, explaining solutions to clinicians, and discussing architecture with engineers.
  • Collaborative approach that incorporates input from Support, Implementation, Sales, and Customer Experience.
  • Strong written communication, time management, and personal accountability.
Responsibilities
  • Use Canvas's SDK, AI-assisted development tools including Claude Code, and other modern tooling to build and ship production-ready plugins directly.
  • Drive rapid iteration cycles by putting functionality in front of customers, learning from actual usage, and continuously improving it.
  • Own the full process from discovery to deployed plugin, connecting customer insight to shipped capability.
  • Maintain a high throughput of working solutions and demonstrate impact on outcomes.
  • Design plugins that solve problems for multiple customers using broadly applicable patterns and reusable building blocks.
  • Understand how individual plugins, multi-plugin solutions, and agent-based workflows interact, and design them to compose effectively.
  • Enforce standards for how plugins are built, deployed, versioned, and coordinated, particularly as agent-driven capabilities grow in complexity.
  • Work with Platform Engineering to identify platform gaps that limit plugins and translate field observations into concrete platform requirements.
  • Lead efforts to deconstruct monolithic Canvas features into discrete, composable plugins that provide greater flexibility and configurability.
  • Prioritize platform investments based on the capabilities that would provide the greatest leverage across the customer base.
  • Develop a first-principles perspective on the future of Canvas's extensibility layer over one-, two-, and five-year horizons.
  • Work with Support, Implementation, Sales, and Customer Experience to identify customer challenges, requests, and patterns across accounts.
  • Translate customer-facing signals into prioritized plugin ecosystem needs, balancing quick wins with foundational capabilities.
  • Share early builds and prototypes with customer-facing teams to validate direction before investing in polish.
  • Connect customer experiences in the field with capabilities added to the broader plugin catalog.
  • Develop a point of view on the direction of the Canvas plugin ecosystem, including missing capabilities, underserved interactions, and workflows enabled by new building blocks.
  • Contribute to Canvas's public-facing developer experience through documentation, guides, examples, and patterns that help customers and partners build on Canvas.
  • Partner with product leadership to align the plugin roadmap with Canvas's long-term platform strategy.
Desired Qualifications
  • Healthcare technology background, preferably with understanding of clinical workflows and the operational realities of care delivery.
  • Hands-on experience with Python or similar programming languages.
  • Familiarity with FHIR or clinical data standards.
  • Experience building on EMR or health technology platforms.
  • Background designing agent-based or multi-step automation workflows.

What believers are saying

  • Studio beta launch in May 2026 expands product surface area and customer stickiness.
  • Hyperscribe and other AI copilots position Canvas for ambient documentation adoption now.
  • Anova's longevity-focused EMR opens a niche market with high-margin membership and cash-pay practices.

What critics are saying

  • Canvas has only 33 employees in 2026, limiting enterprise sales and support capacity.
  • Headcount fell 26.6% from 2023 to 2026, signaling budget pressure and execution risk.
  • Legacy EMRs like Epic and athenahealth can copy workflow automation, crushing Canvas differentiation by 2027.

What makes Canvas Medical unique

  • Canvas Studio, launched May 21, 2026, lets clinics customize EMR workflows with natural language.
  • Canvas SDK, generally available since December 2024, gives developers deep, safe EMR integration controls.
  • Canvas won 2026 Best in KLAS Ambulatory Specialty EHR, validating specialty-practice product strength.

Canvas Medical launches Studio, enabling clinicians to customise EMR workflows using natural language

Canvas Medical has launched Canvas Studio, a no-code interface that enables clinicians and staff to build custom electronic medical record workflows using natural language. The platform, powered by Claude Code and Canvas's software developer kit, was announced at the Canvas BUILD Summit in San Francisco. Studio allows healthcare teams to design and deploy EMR customisations without engineering expertise, reducing what traditionally required multi-year projects to just hours. Users can create automated workflows for clinical, operational and financial tasks, such as value-based care coding automation or automated patient follow-up based on survey results. The platform provides deep access to patient data, AI-assisted coding tools from Anthropic, and integration with large language models. Studio is available in beta from today, building on Canvas Medical's mission to accelerate everyday medicine through customisable healthcare technology.
