Requirements
  • PhD in the natural sciences or computer science with domain knowledge in at least two of TRIUMF’s scientific fields.
  • A demonstrated research record and previous experience in scientific computing.
  • Typically 8 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Extensive experience and expert professional-level knowledge in machine learning, large-scale computing, quantum computing, quantum annealing, quantum-assisted machine learning, and generative models.
  • Expertise in machine learning applications to at least two of the following fields: materials science, nuclear physics, particle physics, life sciences, or software development.
  • Proficiency in Python, Julia, deep learning libraries including PyTorch and TensorFlow, and scientific computing libraries including scikit-learn, SciPy, and Matplotlib.
Responsibilities
  • Apply and develop advanced methods and technologies in machine learning and quantum information to enhance TRIUMF’s research programs.
  • Collaborate with research groups to identify opportunities where machine learning and quantum information can improve scientific output.
  • Provide guidance in developing and adapting innovative methodologies to achieve research objectives.
  • Co-supervise students and postdoctoral researchers engaged in related projects.
  • Lead research and development activities enabling the use of advanced compute accelerators, including GPUs, FPGAs, and quantum computing, at the Canadian ATLAS Tier-1 Centre.
  • Share expertise through presentations, workshops, and training opportunities at TRIUMF and with national and international collaborators.
  • Contribute to training and mentorship through internships, capstone projects, and summer schools.
  • Build and maintain strategic partnerships with industry to expand TRIUMF’s machine learning and quantum information initiatives and their impact.
  • Evaluate complex issues, make non-routine project decisions, and select appropriate methods and techniques for individual projects.
  • Present complex ideas to interdisciplinary teams and team leaders while anticipating objections and concerns.
  • Lead cross-functional work with long-term objectives and impact across several teams.
  • Develop a professional network within the institution and nationally and internationally among academic and business leaders.
Desired Qualifications
  • C++ experience is beneficial.

TRIUMF is Canada’s national particle accelerator centre in Vancouver, running a large accelerator complex for research in particle and nuclear physics. Researchers use its facilities to study fundamental matter and to develop practical technologies, including medical isotopes and materials science applications.
