Requirements
- Graduation from a Registered Nurse program is required.
- A California Registered Nurse license is required.
- For Surgery, Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certifications are required.
- For PACU, SDS, and GI Lab, Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support certifications are required.
- For the Cath Lab, Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certifications are required.
- For the Emergency Department, Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, AB508, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, Neonatal Resuscitation Program, and Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course certifications are required, with the latter certifications obtained within the stated hiring deadlines.
- For Geropsych, Basic Life Support and AB508 certifications are required.
- For the intensive care unit, 5S, 4th Telemetry, 6th Med Surg, and Float Pool, Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale certifications are required, with National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale certification obtained within 30 days of hire.
- Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Neonatal Resuscitation Program certifications must be American Heart Association certified.
- All certifications must be active on the effective date of hire or transfer unless otherwise indicated.
Responsibilities
- Implement the nursing process, including assessment, nursing diagnosis, development of the plan of care and education plan, intervention implementation, evaluation, and plan revision as needed.
- Provide patient education and advocacy.
- Practice in compliance with regulatory requirements, including Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Conditions of Participation, Title 22, California Department of Public Health regulations, and DNV-GL/NIAHO standards.
- Support the department manager and director in quality improvement and growth of unit services.
- Collaborate with coworkers and other departments to provide leadership and manage efficient services with meaningful and valuable outcomes.
- Make patient-care decisions within the scope of practice and based on patient acuity and the patient-classification decision-making method.
- Provide a healing environment, support patient recovery and safe passage through the hospital episode of care, prevent harm, educate patients about their condition and self-care, explain abnormal findings and reporting procedures, and provide comfort and compassionate care.
- Assist the charge nurse with planning patient-care delivery for the shift.
- Contribute to overall unit planning and improvement.
- Precept and validate the competency of new hires and staff learning new procedures.
- Teach nursing students.
- Delegate work to other Registered Nurses, Licensed Vocational Nurses, and Certified Nursing Assistants as indicated.
- Coordinate the assigned team.
- Communicate expectations to assigned staff, report improvement opportunities through the chain of command, and communicate unusual events.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
- A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is desired; if not obtained upon hire, it is preferred that the employee obtain it within five years.
- One year of clinical experience in an acute care setting is preferred.
- Experience treating orthopedic and stroke patient populations is preferred.
- For Cardiac Cath Lab Nurses, one year of nursing experience in an acute care setting such as the intensive care unit, stepdown, or emergency room is preferred.
- For Cardiac Cath Lab Nurses, one year or more of interventional radiology, electrophysiology, or cardiac catheterization laboratory experience is preferred.
- For 6th Floor Med/Surg employees, two years of orthopedic and medical-surgical nursing experience is preferred.
- Certification in medical-surgical, orthopedic, or another specialty is preferred.
- Certification in a clinical specialty or management is desired.
