$15B data centre divides Wisconsin town as residents fear for their homes

A $15 billion data center under construction in Port Washington, Wisconsin, is dividing the town. The complex stretches along 2 miles of highway and covers 2.5 million square feet of former farmland. It is part of Stargate, a nationwide AI data center programme announced by President Trump last year. Vantage Data Centers is building the site in partnership with Oracle and OpenAI. Mayor Ted Neitzke says the project will bring thousands of jobs, infrastructure upgrades, and new tax revenue. Residents have responded with protests, lawsuits, and arrests for civil disobedience. Resident Amanda Mueller, whose home sits about half a mile away, wants a one-mile buffer zone around data centers. Both she and the mayor say the public does not know what such centres do.

Vantage secures over 1GW of Heron Power's 800 VDC transformer capacity for AI data centres

Vantage, a global digital infrastructure provider, has secured over 1GW of manufacturing capacity from Heron Power Electronics. The deal covers Heron Link, a solid-state transformer that Vantage will deploy at its hyperscale data center campuses. Heron Link converts medium-voltage grid power directly to 800 VDC with integrated energy storage. This cuts the number of conversion stages between the grid and the server rack. Heron targets more than 98.5% efficiency. Vantage says the design reduces equipment, floor space, materials, and installation labour compared with conventional 480 VAC systems. It should also help customers bring AI capacity online faster as rack power needs approach the megawatt class. "We will move 800 VDC from a reference architecture concept to a repeatable, deployed platform," said Drew Baglino, founder and chief executive officer of Heron Power.

Environmental groups sue developers of two SA data centers over air pollution permits.

Environmental groups sue developers of two SA data centers over air pollution permits. by Jaie Avila / News 4 San Antonio Tue, September 22, 2026 at 6:30 PM Updated Tue, September 22, 2026 at 7:05 PM Omicron Drive Data Center 3.png Ask NEWS4SA anything What legal action did environmental groups take against Vantage data centers? What type of pollution permits did Vantage data centers receive from TCEQ? Why did TCEQ issue minor pollution permits to Vantage data centers? SAN ANTONIO - Environmental groups have filed a lawsuit to stop two San Antonio data centers that are building their own power plants next to neighborhoods. The News 4 I-Team was first to report on opposition to both Vantage data centers being constructed on the far west side. The lawsuit claims the data centers received permits from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality that don't protect the public from pollution. On Monday, Governor Abbott ordered TCEQ to stop issuing permits to data centers until a state audit is completed. As we reported in July, a company called Vantage is building two data centers, one on Omicron Drive and the other near Rogers Road. City weighs Nelson Wolff Stadium future as Missions plan downtown move in 2029 Both are close to residential neighborhoods and both are constructing natural gas power plants to provide power to the data centers. Dozens of diesel generators have also been installed as backup power. "I'm just concerned about the local environmental impact, in that, were they following regulations, is it going to be safe for my family, my daughter who was just born last year," said David Thompson, who lives across from one of the plants. The three environmental groups that filed the federal lawsuit claim the projects were fast-tracked by TCEQ, which issued Vantage minor pollution source permits, the type typically given to dry cleaners and body shops. The Environmental Integrity Project, Sierra Club and Public Citizen, which filed the suit, argue Vantage and its partner VoltaGrid should have been issued major pollution source permits. which require stringent pollution controls and engagement with nearby residents. "We are asking a court for preliminary relief, to order them to stop construction and operation of these facilities until they install the proper controls and until they obtain the proper permits," said Mary Greene, Director of Enforcement at the Environmental Integrity Project. The I-Team reached out to Vantage and VoltaGrid, but they have not responded. That state audit ordered by Governor Abbott is scheduled to be finished in December. SPONSORED CONTENT MORE TO EXPLORE

Port Washington residents get first look inside Wisconsin's $15-billion Vantage data center.

Port Washington residents get first look inside Wisconsin's $15-billion Vantage data center. Mayor Neitzke leads 13th tour to help residents see the construction project and ask questions Port Washington residents get their first look inside one of the largest construction projects in Wisconsin. Posted 3:47 PM, Sep 21, 2026 Port Washington residents got their first look inside one of the largest construction projects in Wisconsin - a $15-billion data center being built by Vantage Data Centers for Oracle and OpenAI. Mayor Ted Neitzke led the 13th community tour of the site, bringing 400 visitors inside Building 12, one of four super-size structures under construction. The building spans roughly 550,000-square feet and sits on land that was once farm land. TMJ4 News reporters Charles Benson and Alex Gaul has more on what residents got to see in the video below: "The center of this warehouse is going to be rack upon rack upon rack of serves and computers," Neitzke said. Vantage says between 2,800 and 3,000 construction workers are currently on the job. Neitzke, a lifelong Port Washington resident, said the project has shifted politically since it was first proposed. "This was not a political issue at all at that time. So when it was brought to us, it was like insane square foot value, incredible local value," Neitzke said. That value, he said, is measured in growing revenue for the city and its schools - without raising residential property taxes. Data centers have grown increasingly unpopular in communities across Wisconsin and the country, and the Port Washington project has not been immune to that backlash. Questions continue to arise over transmission costs, energy needs, environmental concerns, and noise. Neitzke said the tours are designed to give residents firsthand knowledge before they weigh in. "I just want you to understand what actually is going on out there. So when you go into town and somebody brings it up, you can say, 'Well, I was out there and I saw and I heard.' Whether you agree with it or not, then at least you can, you can make your comments," Neitzke said. When asked whether public sentiment has shifted, Neitzke said it has. "Yes, what I've noticed is the temperature has gone down," Neitzke said. But questions remain around transmission costs and energy needs as well environmental and noise worries. "I learned today that Vantage is going to increase intentionally how much they're going to berm around the site to continue to further reduce the sound decibels," Neitzke said. "I learned that they're going to work harder on the local level to engage and increase people's understanding." Ramon Perez, senior construction manager at Vantage Data Centers, pointed out visible changes to the site since earlier visits. "That dirt pile grew grass since the last time you were here," Perez said. Among those on the tour was Angel Tello, owner of Tello's Grille and Catering, who said his business has grown significantly since construction began. "2026, it's about four times more, the business," Tello said. But Tello said the long-term picture remains uncertain. "It's going to be good? I think nobody knows. I think time will tell us if it's good or it's bad," Tello said. Building 12 - where the tour ventured inside for the first time - sits on land that Nick Didier grew up on. His family sold the property 20 years ago, and he said the land had long been designated for industrial use. "We always knew it wasn't going to remain farmland. It's been designated for industrial for as long as I can remember," Didier said. Still, Didier described the experience as bittersweet. "I'm kind of ambivalent. I don't know if I'm either against it or for it. I think it's good for the city?" Didier said. Many of the tour's attendees have personal stakes in the project. Some say they have already been impacted by the development.
