Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.
  • At least 5-7 years of progressive tax experience, including supervisory or management experience, is required.
  • Strong expertise in sales and use tax, business licenses, and property tax is required.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, and large datasets, is required.
  • Familiarity with Costpoint, Avalara, or similar systems is required.
  • The role requires strong leadership, analytical, and problem-solving abilities to develop solutions to complex tax issues.
  • The role requires strong organizational skills to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • The role requires strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate across departments and with external authorities.
  • The employee must live within commuting distance of Herndon, Virginia.
Responsibilities
  • Lead and oversee the preparation, review, and filing of monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax returns across multiple states and jurisdictions.
  • Prepare and analyze large datasets to identify sales and use tax liabilities and ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Monitor evolving state and local tax regulations and communicate their implications to leadership.
  • Conduct complex tax research, develop strategies, and provide recommendations to minimize sales and use tax risks.
  • Assist with international sales tax and value-added tax compliance and research for international transactions.
  • Manage business license compliance across multiple jurisdictions, including the preparation and submission of applications and renewals.
  • Establish processes to track Business, Professional and Occupational License and other business license renewal deadlines and ensure timely submissions.
  • Assess when business licenses are required and provide compliance guidance to management and operations teams.
  • Research international tax matters, including permanent establishment, value-added tax, and corporate tax obligations in foreign jurisdictions.
  • Manage property tax compliance, including calculating, preparing, and filing returns across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Review property tax assessments and coordinate with local authorities regarding valuations and assessments.
  • Ensure timely payment of property tax bills.
  • Gather, analyze, and provide financial data to support federal, state, and local income tax return preparation and filing.
  • Compile and validate information for franchise tax filings and state apportionment calculations.
  • Coordinate timely delivery of trial balances, adjustments, and supporting schedules to the income tax department.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of tax data provided and ensure accuracy and compliance with internal controls.
  • Respond to information requests from income tax and audit teams.
  • Monitor tax law and regulation updates affecting data reporting or apportionment methodologies.
  • Support process improvements to streamline tax data collection and reporting.
  • Handle large volumes of sales tax, business license, property tax, and apportionment data using Excel, Power BI, or other data analysis tools.
  • Perform data reconciliation and detailed data mining to identify discrepancies and ensure compliance with tax requirements.
  • Drive process improvement initiatives using automation and technology to streamline compliance.
  • Lead responses to tax audits and submit supporting documentation accurately and on time.
  • Serve as a liaison with internal stakeholders and provide guidance on tax implications of business operations and transactions.
  • Support the Tax Director on tax projects and initiatives, including system implementations and tax process improvements.
  • Ensure overall compliance with state, local, and international tax regulations.
  • Oversee the preparation and review of monthly tax provisions and reconciliations.
  • Provide regular management reporting and updates on compliance status, risks, and opportunities.
Desired Qualifications
  • International tax exposure, including research involving permanent establishment, value-added tax, and corporate tax obligations in foreign jurisdictions.
  • Experience with income tax compliance and tax provisions.
  • Certified Public Accountant or equivalent certification.
