About the job
- A BA/BS degree and 0–2+ years of related experience are required.
- Must hold an ASCP Histologist (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) certification, or be eligible for HT certification and obtain it within six months of hire.
- Must have visual acuity and above-average dexterity.
- May come into contact with viral and bacterial infections, blood-borne pathogens, and toxic substances.
- Must be capable of moderate walking, standing, and/or sitting; able to lift or carry up to 20 pounds or push or pull up to 50 pounds; and able to bend and stoop, with normal or corrected vision, hearing, and manual dexterity.
- Must be able to read, write, speak fluently, and comprehend English.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the country of employment without employer sponsorship.
- Monitor project quality control and print slides and cassettes.
- Perform grossing tasks when qualified.
- Load, change, clean, and troubleshoot tissue processors.
- Spawn, trim, and embed tissue.
- Perform routine hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and glass or film coverslipping.
- Create tissue microarrays (TMAs) manually and by automated methods.
- Perform microtomy at various thicknesses according to project requirements, obtain curls at various thicknesses, and section TMAs.
- Perform immunohistochemistry (IHC) on platforms including Dako Autostainer, Dako Omnis, Leica BOND III, and Ventana BenchMark ULTRA; perform validations, assay transfer and development, and concentration and dilution work.
- Perform pipetting.
- Scan digital slides and perform image quality control.
- Verify control slides by identifying tissue structures and their staining characteristics.
- Perform and monitor quality control within predetermined limits.
- Perform routine equipment cleaning and maintenance.
- Organize work and activities to maximize productivity.
- Maintain a safe working environment in compliance with policies and procedures of regulatory agencies and respond appropriately to necessary workplace changes.
- Assess situations, consider alternatives, and independently choose an appropriate course of action.
- Comply with organizational and departmental policies and procedures, participate in programs and activities that support the laboratory's mission, and take responsibility for professional growth and development.
- Comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), College of American Pathologists (CAP), safety, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- An associate degree, graduation from a certified Histology program, or equivalent is preferred.
