Requirements
  • Personal, first-hand experience as a recipient of the mental health system, including experiences such as psychiatric inpatient hospitalization, outpatient services or therapy, psychiatric medications, or community mental health groups.
  • Must become a Certified Peer Specialist or complete the Core Elements of Young Adult Peer Mentoring training within six months of hire, and must become a Certified Peer Specialist within one year of hire.
  • One year of experience working with youth and young adults.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A valid driver's license must be presented at employment; incumbents must be at least 21 years old, have maintained a valid United States driver's license for at least one year, pass a driver's screening background check, maintain a safe driving record, and carry adequate insurance when using a personal vehicle.
  • Ability to use the Young Adult Peer Mentoring Practice Profile.
  • Knowledge of the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health Child, Youth and Family and Adult services systems.
  • Ability to assist youth and young adults in participating in service planning to meet their expressed goals.
  • Skill in mediation and conflict resolution.
  • Willingness to use and share personal practical experience of recovery, wellness management, and the effort required for youth and young adults to have a full and satisfying community life.
  • Knowledge of person-centered, strengths-based, recovery-oriented values, principles, and modalities.

  • Ability to perform physically active duties, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, lifting at least 25 pounds, and assisting clients with activities of daily living.
Responsibilities
  • Support youth and young adults in engaging with services, supports, and community activities while promoting self-determination and shared decision-making.
  • Support youth and young adults through educational, vocational, housing, relationship, and other transitions to adult roles in alignment with their goals.
  • Welcome new youth and young adults to services and activities and provide ongoing engagement and support.
  • Share personal experiences and provide nondirective support, coaching, and modeling to improve engagement in services and access to providers, recovery tools, resources, and supports.
  • Provide individual peer mentoring to five to ten youth and young adults.
  • Provide core staffing for the Access Center and engage youth and young adults during drop-in hours.
  • Staff Access Center activities and events and support full participation.
  • Collaborate with TIP Facilitators and Access Center staff to welcome drop-in visitors, offer peer support, and orient them to available services.
  • Facilitate regular peer support groups on topics relevant to youth and young adults in an open, mutual, and nonjudgmental environment.
  • Assist the Peer Leadership Coordinator and Access Center staff in recruiting for and supporting the Young Adult Leadership Council.
  • Help plan events and training opportunities for Access Center staff, youth and young adults, and the broader community based on identified needs.
  • Conduct outreach and marketing to educate youth and young adults and community stakeholders about the program and services, including direct outreach and creating and distributing marketing materials.
  • Attend community events and activities to engage youth and young adults and explain available benefits and supports.
  • Assist Access Center leadership, clinicians, and TIP Facilitators in identifying and accessing services and providers that benefit youth and young adults.
  • Help youth and young adults develop supportive relationships and community connections.
  • Promote healthy lifestyles and wellness practices, including addressing substance use.
  • Support development of self-sufficiency and positive employment behaviors.
  • Help youth and young adults identify needs and goals related to education, employment, family relationships, spirituality, and social recreation and integrate them into service planning.
  • Help youth and young adults communicate and work effectively with providers, employers, natural supports, family members, and others.
  • Help youth and young adults develop life skills, find their voice, and identify and use their strengths.
  • Use Gathering and Inspiring Future Talent, Wellness Recovery Action Plan, motivational interviewing, harm reduction, and other trained evidence-informed or evidence-based models.
  • Use lived experience purposefully and in a strengths-based way to promote discovery and recovery.
  • Inspire hope and future focus.
  • Attend in-service trainings and staff meetings.
  • Help youth and young adults develop self-advocacy skills individually and in groups.
  • Serve as a bridge between child- and young-adult-serving mental health systems on behalf of youth and young adults.
  • Maximize choices, self-determination, participation, and decision-making in service planning, delivery, and evaluation.
  • Model effective coping techniques and self-help strategies.
  • Provide crisis intervention when needed.
  • Collaborate with Access Center staff and other area Access Centers to deliver services under the leadership of the Access Center Program Director.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
