Kingfisher lifts profit outlook as Screwfix growth and higher margins boost first half. 22nd September 2026 Kingfisher has raised its full-year profit guidance after higher margins, cost controls and growth at Screwfix helped the B&Q owner deliver a near-10% increase in adjusted first-half profit. The home improvement group reported adjusted pre-tax profit of £404m for the six months to 31st July, up 9.9% from a year earlier. Statutory pre-tax profit increased 18.4% to £400m, while statutory sales edged 0.8% higher to £6.86bn. Underlying like-for-like sales rose 0.3% after adjusting for calendar effects, supported by higher customer transactions, while total sales, including marketplace gross merchandise sales, were up 1.6% at constant currency. Profit growth outpaced sales after Kingfisher's gross margin increased 70 basis points to 38.4%. The company attributed the improvement to purchasing and sourcing benefits, growth in marketplace and retail media operations, favourable currency movements and the disposal of its Romanian business. These benefits were partly offset by higher freight costs and an increased proportion of trade sales. Performance in the UK was mixed, with continued growth at Screwfix offsetting weaker sales at B&Q. Screwfix sales increased 7% to £1.45bn, with like-for-likes up 5.6%. Trade sales at the chain rose 6.1%, while trade customers accounted for almost 74% of sales. Kingfisher said Screwfix gained market share during the period, supported by customer acquisition, loyalty initiatives and an expanded product range. B&Q sales fell 2.2% to £2.12bn, with like-for-like sales down 2.9%. Big-ticket sales declined 5.1%, with bathrooms particularly weak, while periods of hot weather affected store footfall and delayed some building, painting and other home improvement projects. However, B&Q's online operation continued to grow. E-commerce sales increased 19.3% to £456m and accounted for almost 20% of sales, compared with 16% a year earlier. Gross merchandise value through B&Q's marketplace increased 34% to £306m. Across the UK and Ireland, sales increased 1.3% to £3.58bn, and retail profit rose 5% to £361m. The retail profit margin improved 40 basis points to 10.1%. The performance outside the UK remained varied. Like-for-like sales fell 2.3% in France, including declines of 0.5% at Castorama and 4.2% at Brico Dépôt. Poland increased 2.2%, while Iberia recorded growth of 7.7%. Kingfisher raised its forecast for full-year adjusted pre-tax profit to between £595m and £635m, up from £565m to £625m. Chief Executive Thierry Garnier, who is leaving the business to take the top job at Ahold Delhaize next year, said: "We delivered a solid H1 performance, growing sales, gross margin and profits through market share gains and continued momentum across trade, e-commerce, marketplace and group sourcing." He added that the consumer environment remained "mixed", but said the group's performance and strategic progress had given management confidence to increase its forecasts. The results beat market expectations and prompted a positive share-price reaction, up about 8.8% after the announcement, as investors responded to the profit increase and upgraded guidance.

The trade tools company wants to open a store across units 23 to 25 at the business centre, and have asked Dacorum Borough Council to grant a change of use for the units to Class B8, which would allow them to be used for storage and distribution. The unit was previously used as an ATS Euromaster MOT centre, and has been advertised by Hartnell Taylor Cook with a lease that is due to expire in October 2028. According to the property's listing, the passing rent for the unit is around £85,000 per year. Built in 2007, it has a front forecourt with parking for around 15 cars, and a mezzanine storage area inside. You May Like If the plans are approved, the application suggests Screwfix would be open from 7am until 8pm on weekdays, from 7am until 6pm on Saturdays, and from 9am until 4pm on Sundays. The application reads: "Screwfix Direct Limited would make a positive contribution to the commercial and community life of the area, providing essential trade counter services to local businesses including plumbers, electricians, builders and facilities departments to large organisations." A decision on whether to grant the change of use will be made by Dacorum Borough Council.

UPDATE: Plug-in solar panels now legal in the UK. Regulations come into force allowing 800 W plug-in solar kits to be installed in England, Wales and Scotland. Plug-in batteries currently excluded, but under investigation. 27 Aug 2026 Plug-in solar panels are now legal across Great Britain, following a regulation change that the UK government said could save families up to GBP 110 ($150) per year. From Aug. 27, consumers in Great Britain will be able to buy and install plug-in solar kits with capacity up to 800 W - a power output that cover up to 20% of an average home's electricity use, according to the UK government. Households can install one array up to 800 W themselves, with no requirement to use a certified installer. The regulation change does not apply to households in Northern Ireland. While plug-in solar is already widely used in European markets such as Germany, British regulations had until now hindered deployment in the United Kingdom. Amendments to UK plug and socket regulations and electricity safety regulations have opened up the plug-in solar market, although plug-in battery storage devices are not covered by the changes. Information and guidance for consumers interested in plug-in solar has already been released by the UK's Energy Saving Trust. The UK government has also removed the need to apply for planning permission for plug-in solar in England. Scotland and Wales set their own planning rules. Despite the removed regulatory barriers, Josiah Mortimer of Byline Times revealed in a post on Bluesky that there are currently only seven legally-compliant plug-in solar devices on the UK government's official database. All seven of these come from just one company - UKSOL. Large UK multiple retailers have voiced support for the plug-in solar, and are expected to stock compliant products in the near future. Some have been in consultation with the UK government since it committed to plug-in solar in March 2026. A spokesperson from Screwfix told pv magazine the trade tool and hardware retailer plans to offer plug-in solar to customers in the fall. Commenting in a UK government press release, Graham Biggart, managing director of catalogue retailer Argos, said the company was "really pleased to now offer plug-in solar panels" for its customers. Amazon country manager John Boumphrey confirmed the online retailer will distribute plug-in solar products to UK consumers, with other major retailers such as Currys and Wickes also planning to list solar product lines. Solar industry figures have welcomed the change. Chris Hewett, CEO of Solar Energy UK said making plug-in solar lawful would bring "cheap, clean power to households that have not been able to access these benefits before." While plug-in battery storage products are not covered by the rule change, Jason Howlett, chief executive officer, Energy Storage Association (ESA), told pv magazine the ESA is in discussions with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero about a full safety review of plug in batteries as part of an ongoing study that will evaluate different plug-in, self-installed battery products on sale around the world. Howlett noted that while the association would "wholeheartedly support the safe introduction of 'balcony' plug-in devices," more work is required, particularly on safety standards. UK battery storage regulations set a high bar for installers, strongly favoring outdoor installations and requiring checks of wiring and consumer units. Possible standards for plug-in batteries and their impact on household circuits are under investigation. Plans have been submitted for a Screwfix pop-up shop in the Morrisons car park on Barons Cross Road in Leominster, with the application lodged by Charlotte Mills on behalf of the company on July 20. The shop would sell hardware, tools, and home improvement products, and offer both ordering and delivery services. If approved, the unit would operate with two full-time and five part-time employees.
