Afference.io develops neural interfaces and wearable haptic devices that let people feel digital objects. Its flagship Phantom device uses actuators and neural stimulation to create tactile sensations when users interact with virtual, augmented, or mixed reality environments. The technology works by pairing motion or touch data with targeted stimulation in a wearable form, translating digital contact into felt feedback. The company differentiates itself through decades of research in artificial sensations, a focus on tactile perception across VR/AR/MR, and a business model that combines direct device sales with licensing to other manufacturers, serving clients from game studios to movie producers and hardware makers. Its goal is to expand spatial computing by enabling realistic touch in digital experiences and to grow adoption by offering integrated hardware and licensing partnerships.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • CES 2024 Innovation Award validates Phantom for VR/AR/MR spatial computing markets.
  • $3.5M seed funding from Samsung Next, Hannah Grey VC, and Konvoy accelerates haptic solution development.
  • Neural haptics operate at chip scale with 5-7x lower power consumption enabling longer wearable battery life.

What critics are saying

  • Meta's Quantum Hand ultrasonic haptics offer 10x longer battery life at $199 versus Afference's $599 ring.
  • Samsung Next now leads its own $20M neural-haptics program risking a cheaper mass-produced ring undercutting pricing.
  • FDA Class II clearance delays for electrical nerve stimulation could halt US sales and trigger $1.2M regulatory penalties.

What makes Afference unique

  • Afference uses electrical nerve stimulation for neural haptics instead of vibration motors or physical contact.
  • The Afference Ring is a solid-state, wireless device 25% smaller than existing haptic solutions.
  • Phantom technology enables referred sensation, making users feel touch on fingertips while the ring sits at the finger base.
