Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in engineering, specifically mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • At least 6 years of experience in a comparable position.
  • Ability to function as the lead manufacturing engineer for product development teams with minimal guidance.

Responsibilities
  • Review component designs and identify Design for Manufacturing opportunities, including critical component functions, optimal manufacturing techniques, injection-molded part gating and parting-line effects, and mold-complexity trade-offs.
  • Review proposed component tolerances and provide input on manufacturing capability across machining, molding, casting, stamping, forming, and grinding; apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing to achieve desired fits between joining parts.
  • Review proposed device assembly requirements and identify Design for Assembly opportunities using laser welding, ultrasonic welding, adhesive bonding, over-molding, error proofing, and poka-yoke techniques.
  • Provide input to systems test requirements for ongoing production.
  • Define high-level manufacturing systems and flows.
  • Select suppliers for parts and equipment.
  • Coordinate parts and equipment fabrication.
  • Work with outside suppliers to define, document, analyze, and qualify manufacturing processes.
  • Identify new vendors, processes, materials, and technologies to improve product quality and reduce product cost.
  • Lead the definition, development, verification, and validation of manufacturing processes for new products.
  • Identify and implement manufacturing and product-related cost-reduction opportunities, including life-cycle cost and cost-benefit analysis.
  • Define, communicate, and develop fixture concepts using internal and external resources.
  • Work with designers and engineers to design and develop manufacturing-related equipment and fixtures.
  • Define and track tooling and equipment schedules and costs.
  • Install new equipment and establish preventive-maintenance and calibration plans.
  • Develop process-qualification strategies and define statistical sample sizes for variable and attribute data based on company and industry standards.
  • Develop detailed Process Failure Mode and Effects Analyses and use the results to develop robust manufacturing processes and determine in-process testing and final-inspection requirements.
  • Write and execute process-qualification protocols and reports using the Installation Qualification, Operational Qualification, and Performance Qualification approach.
  • Make-versus-buy decisions for parts and processes.
  • Construct Bills of Material with appropriate units of measure and inventory points.
  • Create manufacturing routers and manage labor collection and work centers.
  • Conduct time studies and analyze standard-cost variances.
  • Document work in compliance with AtriCure Quality System requirements.
  • Release process documentation using Visio, Excel, Word, Procal, and MasterControl documentation-release systems.
  • Write detailed process instructions, test protocols, and qualification reports.
  • Develop process maps and Failure Mode and Effects Analyses for manufacturing processes.
  • Document intellectual property, including laboratory notebooks.
  • Communicate manufacturing and process issues to cross-functional development teams and suppliers verbally and in writing.
  • Plan work and track tasks in alignment with project plans and team objectives.
  • Develop and communicate manufacturing best practices.
  • Guide the efforts of junior manufacturing engineers and technicians.

Market penetration stands at around 20% in thoracic procedures, with room to grow in sternotomy and amputation applications. Clinical trials could expand AtriCure's market further. The BoxX-NoAF trial is expected to complete enrollment by year-end, with data due mid-2027. AtriCure targets 12–14% growth in 2026 with new devices and EnCompass platform expansion
