  • An MD or DO degree is required.
  • Board certification or board eligibility in Internal Medicine is required.
  • An active, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in any U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia is required.
  • Active American Heart Association Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certifications are required.
  • The candidate must be able to pass a federal background investigation.
  • The candidate must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above the shoulders during the work shift.
  • The candidate must be able to lift up to 50 pounds from floor to waist, lift up to 20 pounds, carry up to 40 pounds a reasonable distance, and push or pull with 30 pounds of force.
Responsibilities
  • Admit and coordinate care for hospitalized medical patients.
  • Perform history and physical examinations upon admission.
  • Evaluate, diagnose, and treat hospitalized patients.
  • Order and interpret laboratory tests, diagnostic imaging, and electrocardiograms.
  • Prescribe and manage medications.
  • Coordinate patient placement within the hospital.
  • Conduct end-of-life discussions and advance care planning.
  • Consult with specialty and subspecialty providers.
  • Manage discharge planning and ensure appropriate follow-up care.
  • Coordinate care with primary care providers.
  • Provide perioperative medical management.
  • Assess and stabilize patients with emergent conditions.
  • Participate in rapid response teams and code team activations.
  • Perform abscess incision and drainage, thoracentesis, paracentesis, lumbar puncture, nasogastric tube insertion or reinsertion, transurethral catheter placement, removal of lines and tubes, joint aspiration or injection excluding the ankle and hip, tennis elbow injections, and fecal occult blood testing.
  • Perform all Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support procedures.
  • Review admissions recommended by nurse practitioners and physician assistants.
  • Participate in person-to-person handoffs for inpatient admissions.
  • Provide consultation and treatment recommendations to referring providers.
  • Initiate social work referrals for homeless veterans and patients without primary care providers.
  • Provide patient discharge education and follow-up instructions.
  • Ensure communication of test results in accordance with Veterans Affairs policy.
