RFID innovation enhances PET circularity.

RFID innovation enhances PET circularity. Avery Dennison's AD CleanFlake RFID technology has achieved RecyClass Technology Approval for its application in PET bottles throughout Europe, marking a significant advancement that enhances the connection between innovative packaging solutions and superior recyclability. This approval confirms that the RFID-integrated CleanFlake design operates efficiently within existing PET recycling systems, ensuring a clean separation during processing and preventing the contamination of recycled PET (rPET). RFID technology has emerged as a vital asset for enhancing supply chain transparency, automating inventory processes, and verifying product authenticity. However, incorporating it into packaging, especially rigid plastics, has faced limitations due to recyclability issues. Elements such as labels, adhesives, and embedded components may hinder PET recycling efforts, thereby affecting yield and the quality of rPET. Avery Dennison's AD CleanFlake platform was designed to facilitate proper label removal during the PET recycling process. By incorporating RFID capabilities, manufacturers can now implement item-level tracking without jeopardizing the circularity of their packaging. The endorsement from RecyClass confirms that the design meets recycling-by-design standards and supports efficient bottle-to-bottle recycling. For beverage producers, this approval presents both operational and strategic advantages. It assures them that RFID can be successfully incorporated into PET bottles while adhering to European standards for recyclability - a growing necessity under regulations like the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and extended producer responsibility initiatives. Moreover, it contributes to generating high-quality rPET. The CleanFlake's adhesive and inlay configuration guarantees that labels and RFID elements separate cleanly during the sink-float separation phase, safeguarding material integrity and preventing contamination. This allows manufacturers to utilize RFID for effective traceability, accurate inventory management, and waste reduction while upholding their sustainability commitments. Importantly, the technology integrates seamlessly into existing production lines, enabling manufacturers to adopt RFID solutions without significant modification to their equipment. This accessibility encourages brands to merge digital capabilities with sustainable packaging practices. In the context of European markets, the increasing regulatory pressures are driving the demand for packaging that is both digitally optimized and completely recyclable. Initiatives such as deposit return schemes, recycled-content mandates, and traceability standards are transforming how brands approach packaging design. The AD CleanFlake RFID solution perfectly aligns with this trend, contributing both to operational efficiency and sustainable practices. By ensuring it aligns with established PET recycling systems, this technology strengthens the argument for RFID use in high-volume segments. It empowers manufacturers to improve supply chain visibility, mitigate product loss, streamline automated retail solutions, and adapt to emerging circular business models. The RecyClass approval is anticipated to accelerate the adoption of RFID within PET-centric sectors. Previously, sustainability challenges had hindered its widespread use, especially among high-volume SKUs facing rigorous recyclability evaluations. With recyclability now confirmed, RFID offers a more practical option for manufacturers aiming to modernize their operations while achieving their sustainability objectives.

ReadyDPP platform targets compliance.

ReadyDPP platform targets compliance. Integrated platform simplifies Digital Product Passport compliance for apparel brands. 1st July 2026 Knitting Industry Mentor, OH, USA Avery Dennison has launched ReadyDPP, a new integrated solution designed to help apparel brands and manufacturers prepare for forthcoming Digital Product Passport (DPP) requirements while unlocking additional commercial opportunities through connected products. The ReadyDPP platform brings together the company's existing software, digital identification technologies, physical labels, hardware, consultancy and technical support into a single offering, providing a streamlined route to creating and managing Digital Product Passports. The launch comes ahead of significant European Union regulatory changes. The European Commission's central DPP registry is expected to become operational on 19 July 2026 under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation. A textile-specific Delegated Act is expected in 2027, after which apparel brands selling into the EU will have 18 months to comply. A Digital Product Passport acts as a digital identity for an individual garment, storing information on its composition, origin and environmental impact. The passport can be accessed through technologies including QR codes, NFC tags or RFID inlays. Beyond regulatory compliance, DPPs can also support resale and recommerce initiatives, combat counterfeiting, strengthen consumer engagement and provide valuable post-purchase data, while helping consumers make more informed purchasing decisions and supporting repair and recycling initiatives. ReadyDPP combines the physical data carrier with a hosted digital twin and cloud-based platform, creating a single ecosystem for managing product information. Avery Dennison says the integrated approach reduces complexity while enabling brands and manufacturers to manage item-level data more effectively and prepare for evolving legislation. Delia Glover, Vice President, Product, Innovation and Solutions Development at Avery Dennison, said Digital Product Passports present brands with an opportunity to improve data management, strengthen customer relationships and reduce losses from counterfeiting. She added that organisations making the greatest use of item-level data will gain significant commercial advantages. The solution is available in three service levels: Essentials, Pro and Enterprise. These range from software-only or labelling solutions through to fully integrated packages incorporating all elements required for Digital Product Passport readiness, allowing companies to scale their capabilities as regulations develop.
