Requirements
  • Registration as a Medical Physicist with the West Virginia Department of Health.
  • Certification in Therapeutic Medical Physics through the American Board of Radiology, the Canadian College of Physics in Medicine, or the American Board of Medical Physics, or obtain certification within three years of hire.
  • Two years of clinical experience or two years of residency experience in medical physics.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong critical-thinking skills with the ability to multitask.
  • Ability to work prolonged periods sitting or standing and view computer screens.
  • Ability to work in an environment that may involve exposure to ionizing radiation during brachytherapy procedures.
  • Some travel may be required.
Responsibilities
  • Design, optimize, technically evaluate, and support the precise and accurate delivery of treatment plans.
  • Maintain quality control of measurement instruments used to calibrate treatment equipment and patient monitoring devices, including ionization chambers, electrometers, constancy-check instruments, and water phantoms.
  • Participate in the specification, selection, acceptance, and commissioning of radiation-producing equipment, accessories, and computerized treatment-planning systems.
  • Provide clinical support including patient-specific dose measurements, appropriate use of multileaf collimators, and special external-beam treatment techniques such as stereotactic radiosurgery, stereotactic body radiation therapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy, image-guided radiation therapy, total body irradiation, and high-dose-rate brachytherapy.
  • Maintain the portions of the Quality Management program involving external-beam radiotherapy equipment.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, supervision, and review of policies and procedures covering radiation-therapy equipment.
  • Verify that external-beam radiation-therapy equipment meets manufacturer specifications and establish baseline performance values for new, refurbished, or majorly repaired equipment.
  • Perform routine reviews of patient treatment plans, including patient and dosimetric data and beam and machine parameters.
  • Participate in weekly department-wide chart rounds to verify prescriptions and review changes in dose, patient setup, and simulation.
  • Review each patient's record weekly for calculation accuracy, appropriate charting data, and fulfillment of the physician's written prescription.
  • Perform an end-of-treatment review of the patient's complete record to confirm fulfillment of the initial or revised prescription dose.
  • Perform special medical physics consultations ordered by radiation oncologists.
