Enterprise PLM giants enter the DPP space: what Centric Software's DPP launch means for mid-market outdoor brands.

Enterprise PLM giants enter the DPP space: what Centric Software's DPP launch means for mid-market outdoor brands. Centric Software's launch of a standalone DPP solution validates the need for dedicated compliance infrastructure. Passr analyze what this means for mid-market outdoor brands navigating EU ESPR requirements. The enterprise shift to standalone DPP Infrastructure. The race for Digital Product Passport (DPP) readiness has officially entered the enterprise software arena. Centric Software, a dominant player in Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) for fashion and retail, recently announced the launch of 'Centric DPP' - a standalone solution designed to help brands meet the upcoming European Union Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) requirements. This launch is a major market signal: it confirms that DPP compliance is no longer a future-looking sustainability initiative, but an immediate, mission-critical regulatory hurdle that requires dedicated technical infrastructure. Why PLM alone cannot solve the DPP challenge. For years, many apparel brands assumed that their existing PLM or ERP systems would naturally evolve to handle DPP requirements. However, Centric's decision to launch a standalone DPP solution rather than a simple PLM update highlights a fundamental truth: PLM systems are designed to manage internal, static product development data. In contrast, a compliant DPP must aggregate dynamic, multi-tier supply chain data, verify third-party certifications (such as GOTS or GRS), track chemical compliance (including REACH and PFAS restrictions), and present this information in a standardized, consumer-facing format. Managing this level of external data exchange and public-facing serialization requires a specialized compliance engine. The Mid-Market Trap: Enterprise PLM pricing and implementation timelines (often 6 to 12 months) can paralyze mid-market outdoor brands ($2M-$20M revenue) who need agile, cost-effective compliance before EU customs enforcement begins. | Feature / Capability | Enterprise PLM DPP (e.g., Centric) | Agile DPP Infrastructure (e.g., Passr) | | Implementation Timeline | 6 to 12 months (requires heavy PLM integration) | Weeks (API & CSV-first onboarding) | | Cost Structure | High enterprise licensing + heavy consulting fees | Predictable SaaS tiered for mid-market ($2M-$20M) | | Data Sources | Primarily internal PLM/BOM data | Multi-source (ERP, PLM, Tier 1-4 suppliers, certs) | | Consumer Experience | Basic landing pages | Highly engaging, brand-aligned mobile experiences | Key ESPR requirements mid-market brands must prepare for now. Under the EU ESPR, outdoor and activewear brands selling into Europe must comply with strict data disclosure mandates by July 2027. This includes providing a unique product identifier linked to a registry, detailing the presence of substances of concern (such as PFAS 'forever chemicals'), and disclosing circularity metrics like recycled material content, durability, and repairability. For mid-market brands with revenues between $2M and $20M, navigating these requirements without the multi-million dollar budgets of enterprise conglomerates requires a highly efficient, agile approach to data collection and serialization. Compliance is not just a database export; it is a dynamic consumer touchpoint and a regulatory gatekeeper at the EU border. Actionable checklist for outdoor & activewear compliance directors. To prepare for the upcoming mandates, outdoor brands must immediately audit their current data architecture. Start by mapping your Tier 1 to Tier 4 suppliers to identify where critical material and chemical data currently resides. Ensure that your supply chain partners are prepared to provide verified transaction certificates and chemical testing reports (particularly for PFAS-free compliance). Finally, evaluate your software stack: while enterprise PLM solutions may work for global conglomerates, mid-market brands require agile, API-first DPP infrastructure that can be deployed rapidly without disrupting existing operations. Centric Software launches Centric DPP to help brands meet EU digital product passport requirements

Centric Software has launched Centric DPP, a standalone Digital Product Passport solution for brands, retailers and manufacturers. The solution creates a governed digital layer for product transparency, connecting information from existing systems to create, register, publish and maintain Digital Product Passports. Its open architecture preserves existing technology investments whilst offering native connections to Centric PLM and Centric PXM. Centric Software provides AI-powered enterprise solutions connecting product development, supply chain and commerce for retailers and manufacturers.
