About the company

XRI Water provides full-cycle water services for upstream oil and gas, handling sourcing, transport, storage, treatment, recycling, and disposal of water used in hydraulic fracturing in the Permian Basin. It runs a large infrastructure network—about 415 miles of buried pipelines and multiple recycling facilities—that moves and processes over 1.2 million barrels of water per day, including turning produced water into reusable supply. The company differentiates itself through its scale, long-term contracts with major operators, and an integrated midstream model that combines logistics with recycling. Its goal is to enable sustainable energy operations by expanding produced-water recycling and reuse, reducing freshwater use and environmental impact while providing reliable water services.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Midland granted XRI a 10-year right-of-way in August 2026, easing maintenance access.
  • XRI’s 2026 site updates show sustained branding around water recycling and infrastructure leadership.
  • Produced-water recycling demand stays strong as operators seek alternatives to disposal-induced seismicity.

What critics are saying

  • Delaware courts awarded XRI over $6 million from Holifield litigation in 2024, signaling governance scars.
  • XRI’s public narrative still cites Evolution as under construction in 2026, implying execution slippage.
  • Permian concentration leaves XRI exposed if Chevron, XTO, or Pioneer renegotiate volumes in 2027.

What makes XRI Water unique

  • XRI’s 230-mile Evolution system links Midland, Reagan, and Upton counties.
  • Chevron, XTO Energy, and Pioneer backed XRI with long-term contractual commitments in 2022.
  • XRI specializes in produced-water recycling, not just disposal, reducing seismicity exposure.
