Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Graduation from an accredited Radiologic Technology program is required.
- Two years of experience as a Radiologic Technologist and two years of electrophysiology experience are required.
- Experience with electrophysiology procedures, including EPS, atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, and ventricular tachycardia ablation, as well as three-dimensional mapping, is required.
- Certification as a Radiologic Technologist through the California Department of Public Health is required.
- A Radiologic Technologist Fluoroscopy Permit through the California Department of Public Health is required.
- Radiography certification through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists is required.
- Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required.
- Fire Life Safety Training through the City of Los Angeles is required; if not held at hire, it must be obtained within 30 days and renewed before expiration.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required.
Responsibilities
- Organize, plan, and direct patient and procedure activities for the designated area when assigned by the Department Coordinator or Department Manager.
- Serve as scrub assistant or circulate for diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures.
- Serve as scrub assistant or circulate for structural heart repair procedures, including pulmonary and aortic valvuloplasty, VSD, ASD, PFO, and PDA closures.
- Serve as scrub assistant or circulate for transcatheter valve replacement, MitraClip, and left atrial appendage occlusion procedures, and participate in clinical trial studies.
- Serve as scrub assistant or circulate for implant procedures such as implantable cardioverter-defibrillator procedures.
- Set up, maintain, and operate rotational atherectomy and thrombolysis equipment, including Rotablator and EKOS.
- Set up, maintain, and operate interventional electrophysiology equipment for ablation, trans-septal ablations, mapping, and electrophysiology studies.
- Assist with cardiovascular tests and record patients' hemodynamic activity using specialized electronic test equipment, recording devices, and laboratory instruments.
- Monitor and document physiological monitoring and recording equipment and document all actions during procedures.
- Recognize cardiac arrhythmias and hemodynamic waveforms and alert credentialed providers and other team members according to protocol.
- Manage patient arterial and venous access sites after procedures, including sheath removal and safe management of hemostatic devices.
- Prepare, maintain, and operate ventricular assist devices and intra-aortic balloon pumps.
- Prepare, maintain, and operate intracardiac echocardiography, intravascular ultrasound, and ultrasound equipment.
- Adjust technical factors according to patient age and body part while minimizing radiation exposure.
- Assist with training and guidance of technologists cross-training in the Cath Lab department.
- Confirm patient identification by checking name and birthdate.
- Review physician notes and special instructions with the cardiologist and patient when necessary to ensure safety and appropriateness.
- Recognize emergency situations, initiate codes, and administer aid as needed.
- Provide radiation protection to patients, staff, and self according to prescribed safety standards.
- Practice sterile technique and prevent cross-contamination of patients and instruments.
- Record pertinent patient information, complete required paperwork, maintain files, archive images in the cardiology PACS, and perform billing functions accurately and promptly.
- Keep Cath Lab rooms and workstations orderly and prepared, and ensure examination rooms are stocked with appropriate supplies.
- Assist with ordering and stocking department supplies and equipment.
- Participate in after-hours uncontrolled standby and callback and use a pager while on duty and standby.
- Perform scheduling, transport, clerical, and other related tasks or projects outside the immediate work area as assigned by the Department Coordinator or Department Manager.
- Maintain cooperation with other departments, medical staff, and fellow employees.
- Use the chain of command appropriately to communicate concerns with the department, coworkers, or medical staff.
- Adapt to changing procedures and goals.
- Use organizational skills and manage time efficiently.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with interventional peripheral vascular procedures, including PTA, stenting, laser atherectomy, and carotid stenting.
- Experience with structural heart repair procedures, including TAVR, TMVR-MitraClip, Watchman, pulmonic valve insertion, and septal closure.
- Experience with cardiac support devices, including IABP, Impella, TandemHeart, and ECMO.
- Advanced American Registry of Radiologic Technologists certification in vascular, cardiac, or cardiovascular radiography.
