Responsibilities
  • Assess physical, psychosocial, cognitive, and functional components; develop treatment plans; order and interpret diagnostic components of the plan; and prescribe non-pharmacological and pharmacological agents.
  • Provide clinical services in the inpatient setting, including comprehensive care and education, and participate in reviewing and developing specific policies, procedures, and practice guidelines.
  • Communicate with patients and family members about diagnoses, testing, and procedural risks in collaboration with a physician.
  • Perform comprehensive health assessments to diagnose and treat individuals.
  • Formulate appropriate treatment plans, including diagnostics, non-pharmacological interventions, pharmacological agents, and education, based on mutually established priorities to maximize patient health.
  • Provide relevant patient and family education and make appropriate referrals to professional and community agencies.
  • Order and provide preliminary interpretation of diagnostic studies.
  • Prescribe non-pharmacological therapies and pharmacological agents within the defined scope of service and according to supervising physician guidelines.
  • Use organizational, prioritization, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities in practice.
  • Provide emergency treatments and initiate emergency lifesaving measures in accordance with ACLS guidelines.
  • Meet all requirements of the practice agreement with the supervising physician under Commonwealth of Virginia regulations and requirements.
  • Obtain, record, and dictate medical histories.
  • Perform, record, and dictate physical examinations.
  • Make daily rounds; record progress notes; write comfort and diet orders; order laboratory tests and non-invasive examinations; write approved orders; and change dressings.
  • Apply and change dressings; remove sutures and staples; perform venipunctures; insert IV needles/catheters, midlines and PICC lines, and sheaths; catheterize urinary bladders; pass nasogastric tubes; place and remove chest tubes and monitoring lines; irrigate chest tubes and catheters; assess intake and output and remove drainage catheters as indicated; perform thyroid biopsies and fine needle aspirations; perform thoracentesis and paracentesis; assess interventional radiology surgical sites; and assess pulses before and after interventional radiology procedures.
  • Educate patients and families regarding disease, procedures, medication, nutrition, healthcare, and post-discharge care.
  • Dictate letters to physicians and patients; act as a liaison between patients and physicians and between nursing and physicians; request consultations from health agencies and act as a liaison; and make and receive calls to and from patients, physicians, and nurses to provide information, advice, and triage.
  • Maintain statistics, complete appropriate forms such as insurance and home-health forms, maintain written materials, and teach personnel and patients to use devices and special equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

(October 5, 2026) - Mary Washington Healthcare is expanding access to specialized foot and ankle care with the addition of podiatric surgeons Lisa Grant-McDonald, DPM, and Joshua Green, DPM, to Mary Washington Orthopedics. Lisa Grant-McDonald, DPM, specializes in adult foot and ankle care, with a focus on reconstruction, limb deformity, diabetic foot care and limb salvage. She completed advanced fellowship training through the St. Francis Hospital System following a three-year residency with the Western Pennsylvania Hospital Foot and Ankle Department. Board certified in foot surgery and rearfoot surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, Dr. Grant-McDonald has a special interest in external fixation and limb-deformity correction, previously serving as fellowship director for the Eastern Virginia Adult Reconstruction and Limb Salvage Fellowship Program. She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in stem cell and regenerative medicine at Old Dominion University. "Patients with complex foot and ankle conditions can benefit from specialized care that considers not only the immediate problem but also their long-term mobility and quality of life," said Dr. Grant-McDonald. "I'm excited to join Mary Washington Orthopedics and help expand access to advanced foot and ankle care for the patients and communities we serve." Joshua Green, DPM, is fellowship trained in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery as well as limb salvage, with experience in forefoot and rearfoot surgery, tendon and ligament repair, and soft-tissue coverage and closure. He provides both surgical and nonsurgical care for lower-extremity conditions, with a focus on improving mobility, function and quality of life. Dr. Green earned his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from Barry University and holds master's degrees in biology from Mississippi College and biomedical science from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He was recognized with the Michael L. Stone Outstanding Professional Conduct Award at the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons Scientific Conference. "My goal is to understand the conditions that affect each patient and develop a treatment plan that helps them return to the activities they enjoy," said Dr. Green. Mary Washington Hospital introduces advanced vacuum-assisted technology for kidney stone treatment. Fredericksburg, Va. (September 8, 2026) - Mary Washington Hospital is expanding access to advanced kidney stone treatment with the introduction of vacuum-assisted ureteroscopy - sometimes called vacuum lithotripsy, an innovative technology designed to improve stone removal, reduce complications and help patients recover more quickly. The procedure combines laser stone fragmentation with continuous suction to remove stone fragments and dust in real time. Unlike traditional ureteroscopy, which typically requires surgeons to retrieve fragments individually using a basket device, vacuum-assisted ureteroscopy simultaneously breaks apart and removes stones during the procedure. The technology is designed to address two common challenges in kidney stone surgery: residual stone fragments that can lead to recurring symptoms or future stone formation, and elevated pressure within the kidney that may increase the risk of infection. "Vacuum-assisted ureteroscopy represents an important advancement in how we treat kidney stones," said Naveen Nandanan, MD, with Urology Associates of Fredericksburg. "By combining stone fragmentation and removal into a single, continuous process, we can be more thorough in clearing stones while maintaining better control of pressure inside the kidney. Our goal is to help patients achieve a stone-free outcome with fewer complications and a smoother recovery." Patients undergoing vacuum-assisted ureteroscopy may benefit from more complete stone removal, shorter procedure times, and a reduced risk of post-operative infection. Vacuum-assisted approaches can also improve stone clearance while reducing the need for multiple procedures in appropriately selected patients. The technology is particularly beneficial for patients with larger kidney stones, dense or impacted stones, or those whose stones are likely to produce significant amounts of debris during treatment. It may also be advantageous for patients at higher risk of complications, including individuals with diabetes, recurrent kidney stones, or a solitary kidney. Previously, patients requiring this level of advanced stone treatment often had to travel outside the region to larger academic medical centers. By offering the procedure locally, Mary Washington Hospital enables patients to receive advanced care closer to home while remaining connected to their established care team. (August 17, 2026) - The Women's and Children's Care Center at Mary Washington Hospital recently welcomed 51 babies in a single week, including four sets of twins, making it one of the busiest weeks for deliveries in the hospital's recent history. The week stood out not only for the number of births but also for the number of multiple births. For Ann Weed, director of Women's Services at Mary Washington Hospital, the week was unlike any she has experienced during her tenure. "In my 28 years at Mary Washington Hospital, I've never seen this many multiple births in a single week and on the unit at the same time," Weed said. "It was a busy week, but our team remained focused on providing safe, high-quality care for every mother and baby. We're honored that so many families trusted us with such an important moment in their lives." While most newborns transition successfully to routine care, having neonatal specialists and a Level III NICU available provides an added layer of support for families welcoming premature infants, multiples, or babies who require specialized care after birth.
