Requirements
  • Must be an active full-time student at American University.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service, interpersonal, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrate honesty, integrity, and confidentiality when handling sensitive user information.
  • Maintain attention to detail, prioritize tasks, and multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Adapt to evolving workflows and procedures with flexibility.
  • Work collegially with members across the library and university.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Be able to lift 40 pounds and push carts.
  • Be available for a minimum commitment of 12 hours per week, with at least 16 hours of availability, including one weekend shift and an opening or closing shift.
  • Remain available through finals week.
Responsibilities
  • Staff various library service desks and assist patrons with front-facing library operations.
  • Answer phones and provide information and directions to visitors about the library and campus.
  • Make referrals to other library departments and campus offices.
  • Address patron concerns and refer them to appropriate leadership.
  • Operate multi-line phone systems.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting for minor technology issues using basic PC and Mac computer operations.
  • Manage the lost and found bin and stock supplies for patron use.
  • Maintain the presentability of library spaces.
  • Record patron data and other statistics.
  • Communicate patron, housekeeping, and building concerns to appropriate personnel.
  • Communicate proactively with supervisors in person and through Microsoft Teams and email.
  • Use Microsoft Office Suite, including Teams, Excel, and Word; Springshare products, including LibStaffer, LibCal, and LibGuides; and library systems such as Alma and ILLiad.
  • Contribute to projects and other duties supporting Library Operations and other library departments.
