Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required; a college degree is strongly preferred.
  • Three to five years of benefits insurance account management experience, preferably in brokerage, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • A Life and Health license is required.
  • Knowledge of employee benefits products and services and how they are delivered to clients is required.
  • Knowledge of related legislation, including the Affordable Care Act, Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, is required.
  • The ability to communicate professionally and effectively in writing and orally with internal and external customers is required.
  • The ability to present information effectively and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the general public is required.

Responsibilities
  • Manage all aspects of the account-service process.
  • Work closely with Producers and other HUB personnel on client service, marketing, and renewal while adhering to HUB best practices and standard procedures.
  • Acquire an understanding of clients’ businesses and insurance objectives and critically analyze and compare insurance plans to determine suitability.
  • Establish and maintain strong business relationships with clients and insurance carriers.
  • Serve as the client point of contact for day-to-day eligibility, claims, billing, and benefits-administration inquiries, and act as liaison between clients and insurance carriers to resolve service issues.
  • Maintain accurate and organized account files by documenting conversations with clients and carrier representatives, updating HUB computer systems and automated agency management systems, and ensuring data accuracy.
  • Stay current with changes in the insurance industry and external conditions that may affect clients, make appropriate recommendations, and attend industry-related continuing-education training and courses.
  • Update annual open-enrollment packets for all lines of coverage, including current benefits and rates, COBRA administration forms, written plan documents, and summary plan descriptions; complete Form 5500 filings when applicable.
  • Submit benefit-of-record letters to carriers, follow up to obtain contracts, and obtain current renewals and benefit descriptions.
  • Market client programs to carriers.
  • Prepare quotes and proposals.
  • Assist clients with billing issues, including auditing and reconciliation.
  • Gather data and prepare or conduct renewal, open-enrollment, and post-renewal debrief presentations.
  • Lead implementation of new and renewal plans or programs.
  • Inform clients about HUB resources, carrier or vendor offerings, and emerging industry trends.
  • Prepare or peer review and, when applicable, deliver the employee benefits compensation disclosure.
  • Obtain post-enrollment numbers for each plan.
  • Prepare annual legal notices.
  • Facilitate benefits-administration and human-resources information-system updates using systems such as Ease, ADP, and Paylocity.
  • Set up human-resources advocacy tools, legal-compliance resources, and wellness value-adds.
  • Review contracts line by line for accuracy.
  • Participate in carrier and vendor program implementations and initiate vendor payments.
  • Partner with Producers to develop and implement clients’ benefits strategies, including designing benefit programs, performing financial analysis and plan assessment, benchmarking, and evaluating funding alternatives.
  • Provide subject-matter-expert training to other Client Services team members.
  • Support, mentor, and train other support staff members.
  • Oversee functions performed by less experienced Account Managers and Assistant Account Managers as required.
  • Perform other assigned duties and projects.

HUB International names Sarah Thompson national real estate practice leader for Canada. A former strata division head takes on a national mandate as HUB pushes real estate as a key growth area. HUB International has appointed Sarah Thompson (pictured) as national real estate practice leader for Canada, effective September 1. Thompson will lead HUB's Canadian real estate strategy and practice development, oversee the creation of proprietary risk and insurance products for real estate owners, developers and operators, and partner with Chip Stuart, HUB's North America real estate practice leader, to build an integrated cross-border strategy for clients operating in both countries. "Sarah's deep expertise and long-standing relationships in the real estate sector make her uniquely positioned to lead this practice at a national level," said Carol Mills, president and CEO of HUB Coastal. Thompson joined HUB Coastal in April 2012 as underwriting manager for its strata insurance program, led the Strata Division as manager from 2013 to 2017 and associate vice president from 2017 to 2019, then moved into marketing leadership, becoming HUB Coastal's chief marketing officer in November 2019, a role she has held since. Significant strate background. Thompson's six years leading HUB Coastal's Strata Division place her directly at the center of one of the most significant Canadian P&C affordability crises of the past decade. British Columbia's strata insurance market saw premium increases of 50% to 300% between 2019 and 2021, with some condo corporations reporting increases as high as 780%, driven by a combination of rising claims severity, higher property values, climate-driven catastrophe losses and a hard reinsurance market. IBC reported the provincial average strata premium increase at 35% during the worst of that period, prompting the BC government to introduce Bill 14 in November 2020 and insurers to agree to phase out the controversial "best terms pricing" practice that had inflated costs for strata corporations regardless of which insurer actually won the bid. That crisis was still actively unfolding through much of Thompson's tenure leading the division, meaning her move into a national real estate leadership role brings direct underwriting-level experience with exactly the kind of acute, multi-year affordability crisis that property insurers and brokers across Canada are increasingly having to navigate in other segments, from Alberta auto to BC wildfire-exposed home insurance. What the cross-border mandate signals. Pairing Thompson with Chip Stuart on an integrated North American real estate strategy suggests HUB wants its Canadian and US real estate practices working from a shared product and service framework rather than operating as separate regional books. For brokers and clients with real estate holdings on both sides of the border, that structure could mean more consistency in how HUB approaches placement and risk advisory for cross-border portfolios, though the specifics of what that integration will look like in practice haven't yet been detailed. HUB has explicitly called real estate one of its most important strategic growth areas, and installing a leader with direct strata underwriting history, rather than a purely commercial real estate or client-relationship background, suggests the firm intends to lean into product development for segments with acute, ongoing affordability pressure rather than treating real estate as a generalist commercial property book. Competing brokerages serving strata corporations, condo developers and multi-family property owners in BC and beyond should expect HUB to push proprietary product offerings in this space more aggressively under Thompson's leadership, given her direct experience with the operational realities of underwriting through a genuine hard market.
