Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Phlebotomy certification is required within one year of hire.
  • Clinical competency is required within three months of hire and every three years thereafter.
  • Two years of phlebotomy experience is required; phlebotomy certification may be substituted for experience.
  • Knowledge of basic clinical processes and medical terminology, customer service concepts and practices, privacy laws and regulations, and multi-line telephone system operations.
  • Skill in operating office equipment and a personal computer using a variety of software applications.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing and to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other employees.
  • Ability to positively identify patients to be drawn 100% of the time, draw blood successfully with one stick on 90% of patients, and recognize reasons to reject a specimen for laboratory processing.
Responsibilities
  • Assess patients to determine the proper procedure and draw blood.
  • Perform newborn and infant heel-sticks; child and adult finger-sticks; and newborn, infant, child, and adult venipuncture.
  • Identify and appropriately resolve problems during specimen labeling.
  • Provide clerical and technical support to the laboratory at SEARHC medical facilities.
  • Answer incoming phone calls and route callers to the appropriate department or personnel.
  • Provide customer service to physicians, nurses, and others contacting the laboratory.
  • Answer questions about laboratory processes, available services, and basic technical issues.
  • Complete chain-of-custody drug collections.
  • Assist with specimen processing, evaluate specimens for integrity, verify correct labeling and paperwork, and resolve documentation discrepancies.
  • Distribute specimens to assigned areas.
  • Assist with laboratory organization, records maintenance, reception, scheduling, and office administration.
  • Maintain department records and ensure files are complete.
  • Update, distribute, and archive productivity reports.
  • Send, receive, and distribute laboratory results.
  • Maintain, order, and stock office and technical supplies.
  • Perform waived testing.
