Requirements
- Associate degree in Allied Health is required, although direct experience may be considered in lieu of education for certified candidates.
- Demonstrated standard knowledge of normal versus abnormal anatomy.
- Ability to recognize and diagnose disease processes pertinent to the examinations performed.
- Knowledge of critical findings and situations, with the ability to address them competently using critical thinking and sound decision-making.
- Excellent knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathology related to abdominal, obstetric and gynecologic, vascular, breast, and neurosonography.
- Ability to adapt scanning technique to perform examinations at all levels of difficulty.
- Ability to work independently and efficiently, with confidence in diagnoses and images obtained.
- Ability to physically assist patients on and off the examination table.
- Ability to perform examinations in the ultrasound department, in surgery or the catheterization laboratory, and at the patient's bedside.
- American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography credential meeting one of the accepted pathways: RDMS(AB), RDMS(OB/GYN), RDMS(PS), and/or RVT(VT), with specified breast specialty exceptions; or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists RT(S) or RT(VS), with specified breast specialty exceptions; or continuous ultrasound practice since before October 1996 with physician evaluation of competence.

Responsibilities
- Assist physicians with biopsies and other invasive procedures using ultrasound guidance for needle placement and maintaining sterile technique as appropriate.
- Organize the daily schedule to ensure efficient patient throughput, performing studies in requested chronological order and prioritizing stat examinations.
- Perform complex specialized ultrasound examinations in abdominal, obstetric and gynecologic, breast, vascular, and neurosonography specialties according to department protocol.
- Use high-frequency sound waves to differentiate normal from abnormal anatomy while maintaining examination quality.
- Prepare a sonographer impression form for each study, including detailed patient history and diagnoses pertinent to the examination.
- Obtain stat preliminary results on abnormal examinations according to department protocol.
- Review and correlate examination orders with the patient's current history and prior examination history to ensure the appropriate examination is performed.
- Verify correct transfer of images and examination information through the Picture Archiving and Communication System and Radiology Information System for radiologist interpretation, and ensure correct charging.
- Perform other duties as needed or assigned.
- Conduct duties in accordance with the organization's Model of Care and Conduct and applicable standards of behavior.
