Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Two to four years of experience designing mechanical test fixtures, assembly fixtures, tooling, or similar custom hardware.
  • Strong three-dimensional computer-aided design and two-dimensional engineering drawing skills, with experience designing parts and assemblies for machining, fabrication, or rapid prototyping.
  • Experience working with internal machine shops or external manufacturing vendors to turn designs into physical hardware.
  • Practical understanding of mechanical testing, including loads, load paths, fixturing, interfaces, and safe test setup.
Responsibilities
  • Deliver production-ready mechanical test fixtures on schedule to enable critical validation and reliability testing across NEO hardware.
  • Develop fixture designs that provide required strength, stiffness, accuracy, repeatability, and safety without introducing unwanted constraints or artifacts into test results.
  • Own complete fixture design packages, including three-dimensional computer-aided design, two-dimensional drawings, materials, tolerances, hardware, interfaces, and assembly requirements.
  • Drive manufacturing handoff by working with internal fabrication teams and external vendors to resolve design-for-manufacturing issues, manage quotes and lead times, and deliver hardware to test schedules.
  • Bring fixtures from computer-aided design into the laboratory through hands-on assembly, fit checks, installation, and test setup, iterating designs based on test-cell feedback.
  • Translate complex test requirements, interfaces, loads, and constraints into simple, robust fixture designs.
  • Apply understanding of tolerancing, materials, mechanical interfaces, hardware, manufacturing processes, and design for manufacturing.
  • Take designs from computer-aided design through fabrication and into a working test environment.
  • Work from first principles and collaborate with Test, Design, Manufacturing, and external vendors.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience designing fixtures for robotics, electromechanical systems, automotive, aerospace, consumer hardware, or other complex physical products.
  • Experience using hand calculations or finite element analysis to evaluate fixture strength, stiffness, deflection, or dynamic behavior.
  • Hands-on experience assembling and bringing up test fixtures in a laboratory or engineering environment.
  • Experience integrating sensors, actuators, wiring, or instrumentation into mechanical test fixtures.
  • Experience with vibration, mechanical actuation, thermal, or environmental testing.

Robotics company 1X has launched preorders for Neo, billed as the world's first consumer-ready humanoid robot, priced at $20,000 or $499 monthly for a six-month commitment. The 5-foot-6-inch robot can perform household tasks like unloading dishwashers and watering plants, and features a built-in large language model. Neo has a soft body, moves slowly, carries up to 55 pounds, and runs for four hours per charge. However, the robot occasionally falls over and requires significant human assistance. Complex tasks require remote operation by 1X employees wearing VR headsets. The robot features cameras and can be remotely accessed for training purposes. 1X claims privacy safeguards are in place, though concerns remain about having a camera-equipped robot in homes.

OpenAI-backed 1X releases world model to power humanoid robots

Norwegian humanoid robot company 1X, backed by OpenAI, has released a new world model called 1X World Model (1XWM) designed to enhance robots' understanding and reasoning in the physical world. The model generates future videos from text and initial images during inference, then infers robot actions from these predictions. Trained on web videos and limited robot data, 1XWM targets 1X's Neo humanoid robot, currently in mass production for home use. Neo can generate predictive videos and reason about household tasks. However, the company noted the current model requires a dual modelling process for video and action generation and has not yet achieved true zero-shot execution. The development aims to give robots general behavioural capabilities for domestic scenarios.
