Requirements
  • Must be a Culinary School Graduate or possess equivalent Culinary Training.
  • Must have proven knowledge and experience in classroom instruction in the assigned discipline.
  • Must be able to recognize and respond to individual differences among students from a culturally diverse student population and make students active partners in the teaching and learning process.
  • Must meet the appropriate credentialing requirements for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
  • Must safely lift, hold, and carry up to 50 pounds of bulky objects and up to 20 pounds of boiling hot liquids or extremely hot pans of food products.
  • Must demonstrate manual dexterity, balance, appropriate knife skills, and hand-eye coordination for culinary instruction.
  • Must be able to stand or sit for extended periods and walk, bend, lift, reach, and stoop.
  • Must maintain and troubleshoot culinary laboratory equipment, including using a screwdriver and pilot-lighting instrument.
  • Must be able to kneel while operating pilot-light reset buttons for up to four minutes.
  • Must be able to present oral lectures and demonstrations.
  • Must travel to a local store for miscellaneous supplies and make appropriate purchasing decisions or substitutions.
  • Must follow proper safety standards while employed by the College.
Responsibilities
  • Deliver effective classroom instruction, including accurately completing student files, records, logbooks, and grades for Indian River State College and appropriate certification agencies.
  • Teach assigned day or night classes on or off campus and arrive prepared and on time.
  • Perform instructional duties assigned by the Vice President, Division Dean, or Department Chair.
  • Reinforce writing skills throughout the curriculum by assigning written work when appropriate.
  • Continue developing personal scholarship.
  • Complete student advisement, classroom and laboratory instruction, and on-the-job site visits.
  • Perform formal food demonstrations, outreach activities, catering activities, and instruction with apprentices for job experience and community networking.
  • Integrate technology into instructional presentations as appropriate.
  • Address varying student learning styles to facilitate learning.
  • Maintain proper student conduct and behavior in the classroom and during other professional interactions with students.
  • Demonstrate professional and ethical behavior toward students, colleagues, supervisors, and the College community.
  • Complete other duties assigned by supervisors.
  • Physically demonstrate new and unique culinary methods, materials, and authentic recipes for food courses.
Desired Qualifications
  • A.C.F. Certification.
  • Two to five years of teaching experience in a community college or other post-secondary institution.
