About the company

Jerry runs an app that shops for car, home, renters, and motorcycle insurance for consumers as a licensed broker, not an insurer, and also tracks car upkeep. It made its name with the car insurance app it launched in 2019, which lines up quotes from many insurers side by side and checks prices again at each renewal. Customers buy a policy in the app, Jerry cancels the old one, and licensed agents answer questions by chat or phone, while insurers pay Jerry a commission on each sale. The app also sends maintenance reminders, flags recalls, gathers repair-shop quotes, and scores driving to earn insurance discounts. Jerry was founded in 2017 through the startup program Y Combinator and is based in Palo Alto, California.

What believers are saying

  • Jobs don't hinge on fresh funding: Jerry has been profitable since 2024 and serves over 5 million customers.
  • Insurers are plugging into Jerry: in July 2026, public insurer Root let drivers buy its policies inside Jerry's app.
  • Remote work is normal: 40 of Jerry's 44 October 2026 openings were remote, versus 1 of 15 at rival Insurify.

What critics are saying

  • Equity is hard to price: Jerry's last public valuation, $450 million, dates to its August 2021 funding round.
  • Rivals chase its customers: in April 2026, Jerry sued Insurify, accusing it of buying search ads on Jerry's name.
  • Few openings for engineers: none of Jerry's 44 October 2026 openings were software roles, and engineering sits partly overseas.

What makes Jerry unique

  • Even hourly agents get equity: all 15 of Jerry's October 2026 openings paying $19 to $21 an hour listed equity.
  • Its founders came from car repair: all three built YourMechanic, an at-home mechanic service, before starting Jerry.
  • Its repair-price tool lives inside ChatGPT: Garage Guard, launched there in February 2026, estimates labor and parts costs.

Root partners with Jerry to embed data-driven car insurance in app, enabling quote-to-bind in minutes

Root and Jerry have partnered to integrate Root's car insurance directly into Jerry's app, allowing customers to obtain quotes and purchase policies without leaving the platform. The collaboration enables users to receive real-time quotes and complete purchases in minutes using existing profile data. The integration is currently available in 34 US states. Jerry customers can customise coverage limits and bind policies entirely within the app, with access to licensed agents seven days a week. Both companies can manage policies through their respective platforms. Root operates a technology-driven car insurance model using data science for personalised pricing. The Root app has reached nearly 18 million downloads and analysed close to 37 billion miles of driving data. Jerry provides a digital marketplace where users can compare quotes from over 100 insurers and manage car, home, motorcycle and renters insurance policies, alongside car care services.
