Requirements
  • Must possess current licensure as required by the state board where services will be provided; West Virginia requires a High Complexity Testing Personnel license or Trainee license issued by the West Virginia Department of Health.
  • A Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology or Medical Clinical Laboratory Science, or a bachelor's degree in a chemical or biological science, is required; a CLIA-grandfathered exception permits 30 or more years of previous experience.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or American Medical Technologists is preferred.
  • Basic computer skills are required.
  • The role requires the ability to multitask and handle stressful situations.
  • The role requires effective communication and the ability to work well with coworkers, supervisors, staff, customers, and patients.
  • The role requires strength and/or stamina for lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying materials and equipment.

  • The role may involve working around strong or unpleasant odors and exposure to agents that may cause serious disease.
Responsibilities
  • Perform and analyze clinical laboratory tests in all laboratory disciplines according to standard operating policies and procedures.
  • Understand testing method principles, perform quality control and preventative maintenance, and review and analyze results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits.
  • Process and analyze samples in a timely and orderly manner while following accurate patient-identification procedures.
  • Set up, run, maintain, and adjust laboratory instruments according to policies and procedures.
  • Take appropriate quality-control action in all technical areas and follow infection-control procedures for job-related functions.
  • Perform quality-control summaries as needed.
  • Perform phlebotomy procedures on patients as needed.
  • Complete forms and report findings to nurses and physicians.
  • Interact with healthcare workers to solve problems and interpret patient laboratory results within the framework of medical technology.
  • Perform routine and basic laboratory testing within a designated clinical laboratory area.
  • Recognize testing inconsistencies and take appropriate corrective action.
  • Maintain patient and specimen records accurately, neatly, and legibly.
  • Follow hospital, state, and federal guidelines for maintaining a safe environment for workers, patients, and the public.
  • Maintain compliance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures for safety, security, and infection control.
  • Communicate and interact professionally with patients, families, visitors, physicians, departmental and hospital staff, and the public.
