Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field and 10 years of relevant experience are required.
  • Five years of experience in chemical engineering or industrial hygiene are required.
  • Experience in management and regulatory compliance with chemicals is required.
  • Familiarity with chemicals and toxins and the ability to meet Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Department of Justice requirements as an Alternate Responsibility Facility Official with access to select agents are required.
  • The ability to pass a background check as required in accordance with select agent regulations is required.
  • Expert knowledge of laws, regulations, standards, and procedures that pertain to chemicals is required.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist certification by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene is required upon hire.
Responsibilities
  • Manage a team of professionals to promote laboratory safety by evaluating, identifying, and mitigating risks and hazards.
  • Direct and oversee University programs associated with research and clinical laboratories.
  • Provide reports to senior management to determine compliance with local, state, and federal codes and regulations.
  • Maintain required records and reports.
  • Supervise, train, and provide guidance to technical staff.
  • Lead specialized or departmental training sessions for laboratory personnel.
  • Respond to emergency situations or off-hour issues as needed.
  • Direct and oversee the Occupational Safety and Health Administration-mandated Chemical Hygiene Program Standard and other University programs associated with research and clinical laboratories.
  • Review all written programs and update them as required to comply with new interpretations.
  • Supervise the daily activities of the Laboratory Safety Unit staff.
  • Provide guidance to laboratory inspectors on actions that can be taken to reduce hazards and risks and provide safer working conditions for laboratory personnel.
  • Assist in applying Chematix for chemical inventories, inspections, and hazardous chemical waste modules for laboratories.
  • Use Chematix to assess potential health hazards, conduct chemical risk assessments, and assess fire loading.
  • Direct and conduct chemical monitoring for anesthetic gases, formaldehyde, methylene chloride, benzene, xylene, and other substances of concern in laboratories.
  • Maintain records of reports associated with assessing and monitoring chemical hazards within laboratories.
  • Develop, update, and ensure access to general laboratory safety training within the learning management system annually.
  • Provide specialized or departmental training sessions for laboratory personnel in research and clinical laboratories.
  • Prepare or provide training on topics such as contaminated systems and hazardous waste.
  • Assist environmental compliance leadership with management of the University spill response team.
  • Support biannual training in responding to radiological, biological, and chemical spills.
  • Review research protocols for the University Committee for Animal Resources for chemical hazards.
  • Follow up on incident reports, participate in University safety committees, and engage in special projects as directed by environmental health and safety senior leadership.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree in a related field is preferred.
