Position Overview

The Instructional Coach (IC) will support the academic strategy and model that enables City Year Chicago to reach school and student outcome goals. The IC supports and implements academic strategy and model for Tier One and Tier Two spaces that ensure we reach our student outcome measures in math and literacy. Create instructional learning experiences for corps and staff that build the skills and knowledge necessary to reach school and student outcome measures. They also serve as active members of the City Year Chicago community in order to advance the site and work toward the Long-Term Impact Strategy. 

 The IC reports to the Senior Service Director and supports 6 to 8 school teams.   

 

Salary Range for this role is $65,000 to $75,000 

Anticipated start date is Fall 2026 

The IC will primarily work on-site at their designated school placement(s) with occasional days at the office.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree required

Minimum 3 years of relevant experience, with proven ability to deliver strong, measurable results

Deep knowledge of instructional strategy, with a focused understanding of interventions for students not performing on grade level

Well-versed in social emotional learning and adult learning principles

Experience presenting and facilitating training for adult learners

Outstanding ability to communicate with diverse audiences

Comfortability with both large and small group facilitation, as well as 1:1 coaching

Responsibilities

The Instructional Coach will perform the following roles and responsibilities as described below:  

Observations & Coaching

Observe each AmeriCorps member (ACM) in your portfolio at least once a month with the Impact Manager (IM) as they work either as a whole class support, one-on-one sessions, or as they lead a tutoring session with their focus list students.

Track the key questions ACMs ask, student actions and responses, as well as the seating arrangements or examples of student work.

Debrief (DB) each ACM after each observation. Debrief conversations should include:

Reflections of the day’s small group session

Follow up on any notes/ steps from previous debrief session.

Review of student progress logs, sample work, data, grades, assessments for action steps towards growth

Model best practice and planning strategies

The development of new action steps & strategic planning for ACM who needs further support and/or guidance

Input and update observation notes and feedback into the coaching logs

Staff Instructional Capacity & Support

Develop and implement staff instructional training and resources to support the successful implementation of the Academic Strategy and Model

Collaborate with the Site Instructional Leadership Team and Site Instructional Rounds to ensure the consistent development of instructional leadership at the site

Engage in co-observation and coaching with intentional debriefs in order to support academic model implementation, improve site instructional practices, and coach staff to improve individual practice

Engage in consistent critical thinking around how internal and external systems impact our academic work with students through the lens of racism and poverty and actively work toward anti-racist, equitable and inclusive instruction for all students

Core Knowledge & Support

Develop and implement corps instructional trainings and resources to support the successful implementation of the Academic Strategy and Model

Engage in observation and coaching in order to support the fidelity and quality of the academic model implementation and reach student outcome goals

Support data driven instruction practices at the site through supporting the training and coaching on using data to inform instruction, and collaborating with Impact Analytics staff on effective data review and analysis

Provide feedback on session planning, data driven instruction and progress monitoring tools to improve corps practice

Organizational Initiatives and Site Support

Participate in site and network-wide meetings and calls, providing insight, feedback, and collective problem solving.

Engage in structured discussion and training on diversity, belonging, inclusivity and belonging aimed at developing stronger cultural competency, both individually and collectively as a site

Partner with City Year Chicago’s departments and staff to ensure that site-wide goals are met, including, but not limited to, the AmeriCorps member applicant interview process, stakeholder engagement, event and service day participation, and cross-departmental committees

Attend conferences throughout the year, as well as additional engagement and training activities throughout the year

Collaboration & Learning

Collaborates effectively with teammates to achieve shared goals and foster an inclusive environment.

Role models a growth mindset and commitment to City Year’s culture and values as a leader within a youth-serving organization.

Performs additional responsibilities as assigned by the direct supervisor to advance City Year’s mission.

Working Conditions

This is a year-round, in-person, primarily school-based position.  ICs are required to work in the schoolhouse a minimum of 4 days per week, except on days they need to attend in-person meeting and/or work outside of the schoolhouse.

Generally follows a schedule aligned with school-day and afterschool hours (typically between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.), with occasional early mornings, evenings, or weekend hours for events, trainings, or service days.

Position requires travel between multiple school sites within the district and occasional local travel for City Year events.

Must be able to work in a fast-paced, youth-centered school environment, with a noise level that can range from moderate to high.

Occasional lifting or carrying of materials (e.g., event supplies, training materials) up to ~20 lbs.

Reliable transportation to and from school sites and office locations is required, or ability and willingness to navigate public transit system.

Must have reliable internet access when participating in any required virtual meetings or training.

The Outsiders educational initiative The Stay Gold Project partners with City Year. The initiative works with public schools to ensure the musical is accessible and inclusive for students. October 05, 2026 By Margaret Hall Broadway's The Outsiders' educational initiative, The Stay Gold Project, is partnering with City Year, a national nonprofit that recruits AmeriCorps members to serve in schools for a year as student success coaches. The Stay Gold Project works with public schools across the country to ensure the musical accessible and inclusive for students. Since the program began on Broadway in 2024, The Stay Gold Project has provided more than 1,800 tickets to middle and high school students in the New York City Public School system, at no cost, as well as providing thousands more from coast to coast alongside the musicals national tour. The new partnership will give students and educators free access to both the Broadway and touring productions, along with providing educational resources to continue the conversation back in the classroom. City Year's local 29 sites, supporting 250 schools across the country, will coordinate attendance and provide a study guide and post-show conversations with company members. City Year's 1,500 student success coaches will accompany students to the theatre and help them explore the story's themes and connect them to their own lives. "City Year student success coaches work alongside teachers to provide academic support, mentoring, and enrichment that helps students build confidence, develop life skills, and stay connected to their goals," said, Jim Balfanz, CEO of City Year. "At its core, this work helps young people realize their potential, believe in their future and their dreams, and know that they matter. That's something The Stay Gold Project believes in, too, and we could not be more excited to be working together." Situation Project serves as fiscal sponsor for The Stay Gold Project, allowing donations to now support students in cities across the country where The Outsiders is playing. Published in 1967, The Outsiders was written by a then 15-year-old Susie Hinton who was inspired by her fellow classmates and what they were going through as teenagers growing up in Tulsa, OK. Over 50 years later, The Outsiders has sold close to 20 million copies and is a vital part of curriculums in schools around the world, translated into more than 30 different languages. The Outsiders is also credited with creating the Young Adult genre as Playbill, Inc. know it today. Led by director Danya Taymor, and set in 1967 Tulsa, Oklahoma, The Outsiders follows Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, and their chosen family of "outsiders," who are in a fight for survival and a quest for purpose in a world that may never accept them. The musical opened on Broadway April 11 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.

District 161 approves $130,000 City Year partnership at Parker Junior High. More in Education: Flossmoor School District 161 will continue its partnership with City Year at Parker Junior High School for a third year after the Board of Education approved the agreement Monday, Sept. 14. The district will pay $130,000 for eight City Year AmeriCorps members to work at Parker during the 2026-27 school year. The team will remain at the school throughout the school day and year, working alongside teachers and providing additional support to students. City Year members provide one-on-one and small-group social-emotional support, after-school tutoring and activities, attendance monitoring and incentives, schoolwide events and family engagement. In classrooms, members also assist teachers with routines and procedures, student engagement and small-group support. Individual team members are assigned groups of students and serve as "Student Success Coaches." They check in with students daily, provide homework and social-emotional support and connect with their families, with the goal of developing mentoring relationships. District officials said City Year has had a positive impact during its first two years at Parker. According to the district's action report, Parker increased 14 points on its overall summative designation, which officials attributed in part to a significant reduction in chronic absenteeism. Attendance will remain a focus this year, along with schoolwide support and monitoring the effectiveness of after-school tutoring. The $130,000 cost will be paid from local funds, a change from previous years when the program was funded through Title I dollars. The agreement extends a partnership that began during the 2024-25 school year. District documents show City Year has cost $130,000 annually for Parker Junior High, bringing the three-year total to $390,000.

The summer Manchester NH finally got A standing Thursday night. July 9, 2026 For years, a Manchester summer week has been ad-hoc. A Fisher Cats game if the homestand landed right. A Palace show if the touring calendar cooperated. A block party the last Friday of the month if you remembered. Nothing you could set a watch to. That changes on July 9. Veterans Memorial Park now has a standing Thursday concert on the calendar every week through Labor Day, free, outdoors, and locally programmed. It is the first time downtown has a weekly, no-ticket anchor in the summer, and it quietly rewires the shape of the whole week. The Thursday that did not exist last summer. The Levitt AMP Manchester Music Series runs July 9 through September 3 at Veteran's Memorial Park. It is the first year of a three-year run funded by a multi-year grant of $112,000 in matching funds to present a free outdoor music series at Veteran's Memorial Park in Manchester in 2026, 2027, and 2028, awarded to City Year New Hampshire and produced in partnership with the City of Manchester. The lineup was revealed at the Rex Theatre on June 9. Mayor Jay Ruais, State Rep. Matt Wilhelm, and Heather McGrail, President and CEO of the Greater Manchester Chamber unveiled the roster together. Wilhelm, a City Year alum, was the lead organizer on the grant application. The Thursday lineup at Veterans Park: * July 9 - Dyer Davis * July 16 - Gentleman Brawlers * July 23 - Domenic Marte * July 30 - Kyshona * August 13 - Old Hat Stringband * August 20 - Stephen Kellogg Two things to know about how this works. First, Levitt AMP concerts nationally are 7-10 free outdoor concerts per year, injecting new life into underused public spaces and creating joyous, welcoming community destinations, which means the Manchester series is small enough that missing a Thursday actually costs you something. Second, the fundraising piece matters locally: the grant is matching, and the community campaign through NH Gives funds New Hampshire-based opening acts at each show. So the openers you see are being paid by donations from people who live within a fifteen-minute drive. The Wednesday you can already set a watch to. The Levitt series arrives on top of a rhythm that has been building for a couple of years. The Manchester Farmers and Makers Market runs Wednesdays at Arms Park all season: 6/24, 7/1, 7/8, 7/15, 7/22, 7/29, 8/5, 8/12, 8/19. Same place, same day, so the mental cost of remembering it is zero. Pairing the market on Wednesday with a Levitt show on Thursday gives downtown two weeknight anchors within twenty-four hours of each other, both walkable from Elm Street, both free. That is a genuinely new pattern for the neighborhood. If you live north of Bridge Street or on the West Side, it is now worth planning a mid-week walk downtown the way you would plan a Saturday errand loop. Homestand math at delta dental stadium. The Fisher Cats schedule shows a Double-A pattern that is easy to miss if you are not looking for it. Homestands cluster in six-day blocks against the same opponent, then the team leaves town for a week. A Levitt show at Veterans Park is a nine-minute walk from the stadium. A Wednesday market is closer. On 7/23 and 8/5 you can genuinely stack them. What changed on Elm Street this year. Two Elm Street changes worth knowing about, because they affect the pre- and post-event equation: The Black Brimmer is gone. Miller's Tavern is now open. This is the second location for Miller's, with the original located in Methuen, Mass. They are open 7 days a week from 11am through last call and with the good location on Elm Street at the Corner of Lowell Street, that could last pretty late. The menu is broader than what was there before, with pizza and baked haddock in the same list. Brothers North End Diner opened last fall on the north end of downtown. It is not affiliated with Brothers Pizza or North End Bistro, two former well known Manchester restaurants, both now closed, which is worth saying because the name suggests otherwise. Breakfast to late dinner, seven days a week. Useful for a pre-market Wednesday coffee or a post-game late plate. If you want a millyard option that has held up, the anchors are still the anchors. The Foundry remains NH's largest certified farm to table restaurant, 900 Degrees keeps its deck open through the summer, and Common Man Roadside works for a fast turn before an event. The date to actually circle. August 22 is stacked. The New Hampshire Irish Festival at the Palace, the Rush tribute at the Rex, and it is a Saturday, so you get the Farmers and Makers Market that Wednesday leading in and no Levitt conflict. If you are hosting anyone from out of state this summer, that is the weekend to land them. Second choice: the July 3 Independence Day Celebration at Arms Park, which slides into the July 7-12 Fisher Cats homestand and the July 9 Levitt debut. Six days of continuous downtown programming for the price of parking. A few things that shape the summer if you use downtown daily: Veteran's Memorial Park is the Levitt site, which means Thursday evenings will bring crowds and street parking pressure between roughly 5 and 9 p.m. from July 9 forward. The park is small enough that a couple hundred people fills it visually. Plan around it if you work late downtown on Thursdays. Fisher Cats homestand traffic on Line Drive and Granite Street is predictable but heavy on Friday and Saturday nights. Arms Park sits directly next to the stadium, so a Wednesday market and a Wednesday home game do not usually collide, but check the calendar if you are picky about parking. The Levitt series has a community fundraising campaign through NH Gives to fund New Hampshire-based opening acts at each concert, which is worth mentioning because the openers are the part most likely to disappear if the match is not hit in future years. Year one is funded. Years two and three depend on local giving. What this adds up to for someone who lives here. If you have lived in Manchester for a while, you have watched the downtown calendar fill in slowly. First the Fisher Cats. Then the Rex reopening. Then a real farmers market. The Levitt series is the piece that turns those into a week rather than a list. The practical difference is small and specific. You no longer need to check a calendar to know if there is something to walk to on a Thursday between July and Labor Day. That is a new fact about Manchester, and it is the kind of fact that shapes how a neighborhood feels to the people who already live in it. For a lot of homeowners in the North End, Straw-Smyth, or the East Side, the closest analog is what happened when Elm Street got its restaurant density back. You did not move for it. But once it was there, the shape of a weeknight changed. The Thursday anchor at Veterans Park is going to do the same thing on a smaller scale, and the first summer of it is happening right now. To position AmeriCorps as a primary workforce development and reskilling strategy for meeting entry-level economic displacement and preparing Americans for the evolving workforce, the white paper outlines a policy roadmap, which includes: * Modernizing the Segal Education Award including expanding allowable uses to any Title IV institution-including community colleges and job training programs-or for student loan repayment, and excluding the award from federal and state income tax to maximize educational benefits and reduce financial burdens on participants. * Aligning AmeriCorps with WIOA including formally defining AmeriCorps service as "work-based learning" or "pre-apprenticeship" to allow participants to quality for WIOA-funded training services. * Removing barriers to professional development including changes to the cap on the number of training hours allowed for AmeriCorps members and changes to limits on public-private workforce partnerships to engage a broader set of employers. * Establishing an AmeriCorps Apprenticeship Corps to enable high-quality earn-and-learn opportunities and better integration with registered apprenticeships, expanding pathways to employment in high-demand sectors. * Establishing an AmeriCorps credential for the skills developed during service, such as metacognition, cross-cultural dialogue, and crisis management, which participants develop and which help prepare them for AI-resilient jobs following their service. * Supporting transitions from service to employment including strengthening workforce development as a core and measured outcome for AmeriCorps programs and investing in related data systems and infrastructure to track these outcomes.
