Requirements
  • A Master's degree in a relevant field and one year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, including using and understanding scientific terminology in written and oral formats.
  • Ability to work independently and in a small group setting.
  • Working knowledge, based on six months of relevant work experience, of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
  • Demonstrated independence and competence in data management and analysis of research findings, including spreadsheets, graphics, and statistical programs.
  • Ability to interact positively and productively with diverse staff.
  • Ability to prioritize work demands and coordinate research protocols with other staff.
  • Organizational skills and careful attention to detail to perform procedural steps consistently, fully, and on time.
  • Experience with detailed record keeping, sample cataloging, data entry, statistical analysis, laboratory maintenance, autoclaving, and sterile techniques.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment, items, or animals weighing up to 50 pounds; work in a biosafety hood for extended periods; manipulate existing animal housing; and stand or walk for extended periods.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and support specific sections of ongoing and newly funded non-human primate research projects involving the immune system, immunodeficiencies, infectious diseases, and specific pathogen-free projects.
  • Manage and coordinate research protocols, schedule procedures with internal and external laboratories, and communicate with research and animal program units.
  • Prepare written reports, regulatory documentation, laboratory and image analyses, and materials for manuscripts and grants.
  • Develop and maintain study budgets supporting more than 1,000 rhesus macaques across more than 75 new and ongoing research projects.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of research-related tools, imaging, procedures, and analyses.
  • Onboard and train new and current IDR staff.
  • Perform behavior training, data collection, data entry, and reporting of research findings in written and oral formats to local and national collaborators.
  • Coordinate multiple research groups to organize and schedule more than 75 research protocols involving typically more than 1,000 rhesus macaques and more than 100,000 procedures annually.
  • Coordinate with veterinary, animal care, surgical, and principal investigative staff to facilitate project expectations, schedules, and progress.
  • Provide investigative staff with feedback on project progress and goals.
  • Coordinate with offsite laboratories for biomedical sample data analysis.
  • Perform fluorescence imaging technology and train collaborators in its use, including required safety procedures and knowledge of primate anatomy and physiology.
  • Schedule and coordinate animal procedures, surgery, necropsy, laboratory space, sample processing, and housing requirements.
  • Maintain working knowledge of USDA, IACUC, AAALAC, and other applicable guidelines and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Prepare descriptive and analytical reports and evaluate data for publications, grant applications, and progress reports.
  • Develop and maintain study budgets and ensure inventory needs are met.
  • Facilitate communication, training, and oversight of research assistants.
  • Perform laboratory procedures including cell separation, immunoassays, cell staining, flow cytometry, and cell culture.
  • Perform minor surgical biopsy sampling, bronchoalveolar lavages, blood collection, and other minor procedures and sample collection on non-human primates.
  • Perform anesthetic monitoring of non-human primates.
  • Administer drugs and antibodies.
  • Maintain laboratory inventory, order supplies, and restock supplies.
  • Ship and handle animal tissues for various support laboratories.
  • Prepare reagent solutions and perform routine laboratory and equipment maintenance.
  • Analyze and summarize data from ongoing projects and specific pathogen-free breeding colonies.
  • Track and report milestones.
  • Present research findings to fellow researchers and external departments.
  • Maintain accurate records of data obtained during research.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Master's or Bachelor's degree in Biology, Zoology, Animal Sciences, Immunology, or Pathology.
  • Three or more years of laboratory experience performing immunoassays and cell separation techniques.
  • Experience managing laboratories or research units and training and supervising students and research assistants.
  • At least three years of laboratory experience in molecular or cellular biology, animal research, and/or in vivo research.
  • Experience maintaining inventories of laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Experience with geriatric, infant, immune-compromised, and ABSL-3-level non-human primates.
