Requirements
  • A minimum of at least 3 years of manager-level or higher shelter leadership and management experience related to the essential responsibilities, including overseeing large-scale shelter operations and staffing, preferably including municipal shelter operations in multiple locations or facilities.
  • Familiarity and knowledge of the Los Angeles Animal Services system is required.
  • Experience using statistical information to inform programming and operational success, including change-management strategies and program direction, with strong attention to detail and advanced organizational and time-management skills.
  • A customer-centric, non-judgmental approach to engaging adopters, partners, visitors, volunteers, and colleagues, with familiarity and comfort with non-judgmental philosophies.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, decisiveness in difficult and fast-paced situations, diplomacy, and the ability to work with people from different backgrounds and handle sensitive and confidential situations.
  • Excellent communication, public-speaking, and presentation skills, with experience advocating the organization's position and supporting, engaging with, and developing relationships with volunteers and donors.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and familiarity with shelter or animal-management software and Asana, or the ability and willingness to learn new online information systems.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varied weather conditions; bend, stoop, reach, climb, twist, crawl, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work safely and humanely with dogs, cats, and other animals of all sizes, temperaments, and medical statuses, including driving animal transports.
  • A valid driver's license and eligibility for coverage under Best Friends' vehicle insurance.
  • Ability and means to travel regularly to various locations on a flexible schedule.
  • Availability for varying daily hours and days, including weekends, nights, and holidays.
  • Applicants must have valid U.S. work authorization that does not now or in the future require visa sponsorship by Best Friends Animal Society.
Responsibilities
  • Work on rotation onsite at all six Los Angeles Animal Services shelters for approximately three years in a leadership position, collaborating with Los Angeles Animal Services to create systemic change and achieve project goals.
  • Directly consult on shelter and field lifesaving operations; plan, implement, facilitate, engage, monitor, and evaluate lifesaving programming.
  • Evaluate and monitor lifesaving programs, proven strategies, and continuing education to attain organizational goals and achieve no-kill status by the scheduled deadline.
  • Implement and communicate the operations plan with specific metrics and goals for Best Friends and Los Angeles Animal Services.
  • Act on written recommendations to address program and partner-organization gaps and promote collaboration with organizations outside the shelter system to achieve no-kill outcomes.
  • Work within the operations and Los Angeles Animal Services budgets to facilitate resources appropriately and achieve project goals within organizational constraints.
  • Identify areas needing additional support and coordinate with Best Friends staff to facilitate support for project success and sustainability.
  • Manage communication within the assigned agency and with stakeholders, ensuring teams, leaders, and stakeholders are regularly updated and deliver training to staff and volunteers.
  • Assist Los Angeles Animal Services leadership with creating, updating, and obtaining approval for standard operating procedures compliant with applicable laws and ordinances across all locations.
  • Provide performance-management oversight for Best Friends staff and support training for Los Angeles Animal Services staff.
  • Manage communications within Best Friends, keeping stakeholders updated on progress, challenges, and lifesaving progress toward goals.
  • Identify opportunities for content, marketing, public relations, communications, and development to showcase local progress on local and national platforms.
  • Oversee collection of key performance indicator and shelter-program data, including shelter and field statistics, and update HERO and KPI systems.
  • Build relationships with Los Angeles Animal Services and the broader Los Angeles community to improve shelter awareness and image, grow local partnerships, increase Best Friends' brand exposure, and expand opportunities for safer practices and reduced shelter deaths.
  • Establish and track quantitative and qualitative success metrics aligned with mission impact, organizational priorities, and cross-team collaboration.
  • Collaborate with Los Angeles Animal Services teams and volunteers to communicate and implement strategic direction for the Los Angeles project.
  • Advance measurement and collaborative completion of identified tasks and services in the Los Angeles Animal Services plan.
  • Elevate programming stories and achievements for promotion and industry credibility while maintaining strong interdepartmental and divisional relationships.
  • Provide feedback and tactical guidance to maximize value toward Best Friends' shared Los Angeles Animal Services plan and goals.
  • Stay informed about changes in animal welfare and community support systems and work with leadership to support organizational objectives.
  • Build relationships with Los Angeles Animal Services stakeholders, community partners, city officials, and community members to increase strategic partnerships and implement community strategies.
  • Develop unengaged partners into the Best Friends Network when appropriate.
  • Generate animal-welfare thought-leadership content topics for leadership and board communication channels, including public relations, blogs, and social media.
