Roop, senior vice-president and CTO at the Philadelphia-based paint and coatings maker, received the 2026 Paint & Coatings Industry Lifetime Achievement Award on Sept. 16 at the Coatings Trends & Technologies Summit in Lombard, Ill. The award, presented immediately after a keynote by PPG associate fellow Calum Munro, recognizes a career of advancing the coatings industry through technical leadership. PCI said Roop was chosen for connecting scientific innovation with customer needs and for mentoring the next generation of scientists and engineers. Roop holds a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from West Virginia University and a PhD in chemical engineering from Texas A&M University. He spent more than 20 years at DuPont in research and operations roles, including leading the global light-vehicle technology team within DuPont Performance Coatings, before joining Axalta in 2013. He went on to direct research and development for Europe, the Middle East and Africa from a posting in Germany, then led global R&D across Axalta's Refinish and Industrial divisions before being named chief technology officer in 2019. In that role, Roop now oversees roughly 1,300 scientists and engineers across 21 labs worldwide. Axalta said his technology organization has collected 39 external awards since he became CTO, including nine R&D 100 Awards, 11 BIG Innovation Awards and 19 Edison Awards - though PCI Magazine's own writeup of the honour put the tally slightly lower, at seven R&D 100s and 14 Edison Awards. He has also built out an internal innovation incubator and founded Axalta's Fellows Forum, which promotes technical excellence and has elevated scientists such as Dr. Carmen Flosbach and Dr. Michael Koerner to the company's highest technical rank, Axalta Fellow. In a separate 2026 Axalta release marking six BIG Innovation Awards for products ranging from a low-solvent waterborne clearcoat to a flame-resistant coating for electric-vehicle battery enclosures, he said the wins "reflect the extraordinary work of our teams who continuously push the boundaries of what's possible in science." He has also described publicly how artificial intelligence is speeding up Axalta's research and development, pointing to a shift away from lengthy rounds of physical experimentation toward AI-assisted modelling that can narrow years of trial-and-error down to far fewer test runs.
