Requirements
  • Prior experience working with seniors, preferably in a long-term care setting.
  • Graduation from a post-secondary diploma or degree program in recreation and leisure studies, therapeutic recreation, or another related field from a community college or university.
  • Alternatively, enrollment in a community college or university diploma or degree program in recreation and leisure studies, therapeutic recreation, or another related field, with the intent to successfully complete the program within three years of being hired.
  • Alternatively, a post-secondary degree or diploma in a health-care-related field and demonstrated skills, knowledge, and experience providing recreation and leisure services in a health-care setting.
  • Experience planning, developing, and facilitating meaningful activities across all domains of wellness for individuals with varying levels of functioning.
  • Experience with assessment, care planning, and related documentation.
  • Knowledge of therapeutic programming techniques and approaches.
  • Knowledge of recreation and leisure principles and practices and their implementation in a long-term-care or health-care setting.
  • Experience supporting others to foster a culture of resident engagement.
Responsibilities
  • Assist in developing, planning, and implementing daily recreation and leisure activities in the home and community using resident information and preferences in accordance with the organization's resident-programming philosophy.
  • Create and maintain engaging spaces and environments in the home that support meaningful resident activity and participation.
  • Develop and maintain communication with residents and their families and friends, volunteers, community groups, and agencies.
  • Observe, report, and document changes in residents' ability to participate in activities, and update plans of care as appropriate.
  • Support all departments in fostering resident engagement in meaningful ways.
  • Lead programs in a manner that supports and maximizes residents' skills and abilities.
  • Participate in ongoing evaluation of the recreation program and related quality-improvement processes.

  • Prior experience working with seniors in a long-term-care setting is preferred.
