Requirements
  • An undergraduate degree in communications, public relations, journalism, English, marketing, political science or a related field is required.
  • Six or more years of progressively responsible communications experience is required.
  • Experience leading highly complex, high-profile or strategically significant communications initiatives is required.

Responsibilities
  • Lead highly complex, high-profile or strategically significant communications initiatives aligned with institutional priorities.
  • Develop communications strategies, approaches and implementation plans addressing institutional priorities, stakeholder needs and reputational considerations.
  • Independently lead communications work requiring advanced judgment, analysis and coordination across multiple stakeholders, functions and areas of expertise.
  • Oversee communications activities involving significant institutional visibility, sensitivity or complexity.
  • Evaluate communications effectiveness and identify opportunities to strengthen outcomes, engagement and reputation.
  • Lead the development of strategic messaging, narratives and communications materials supporting institutional priorities and complex communications objectives.
  • Research, analyze and synthesize complex, sensitive or ambiguous information into clear, compelling and audience-appropriate communications.
  • Produce and review high-profile communications products across print, digital, executive and stakeholder-facing formats.
  • Ensure communications are accurate, accessible, inclusive and aligned with institutional voice, tone and strategic direction.
  • Provide subject-matter expertise on messaging, positioning and communications approaches within the area of specialization.
  • Provide advanced communications advice and recommendations to senior leaders, stakeholders and project teams.
  • Advise on communications risks, stakeholder considerations, reputational implications and implementation approaches.
  • Build trusted relationships with leaders, service partners and stakeholders across the institution.
  • Influence communications approaches and decision-making through expertise, credibility and professional judgment.
  • Support complex stakeholder engagement, consultation and alignment activities.
  • Identify communications risks, stakeholder concerns and reputational considerations associated with institutional initiatives and decisions.
  • Lead communications planning and implementation for sensitive, high-risk or emerging issues within the area of expertise.
  • Monitor internal and external environments to identify issues, trends and developments that may affect institutional communications.
  • Advise stakeholders on communications implications, mitigation approaches and response considerations.
  • Support institutional preparedness, response planning and emergency communications activities as required.
  • Evaluate communications effectiveness, audience insight, stakeholder feedback and performance information to identify trends, risks and opportunities.
  • Use qualitative and quantitative information to inform recommendations, improve communications outcomes and strengthen institutional effectiveness.
  • Contribute to the development and enhancement of communications frameworks, standards, tools and practices.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen communications consistency, capability and service delivery across the institution.
  • Provide leadership, coaching and guidance to communications colleagues and stakeholders on complex communications matters.
  • Share knowledge, lessons learned and emerging practices to support capability development across the communications function.

The Student Venture Fund (SVF) at the University of Waterloo provides students with hands-on venture capital training by evaluating startups, conducting market research, valuing companies, performing due diligence, and making investment recommendations under supervision from finance professors and industry mentors. Students work through the full investment process, presenting ideas and executing approved investments as part of a live early-stage portfolio. The program differs from typical courses by offering an end-to-end, real-money learning experience with ongoing mentorship and industry interaction. Its goal is to develop practical VC skills in students while building real-world investment experience and expanding connections with the startup and investment community.
