About the company

Marathon Petroleum refines crude oil into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and other products for wholesale buyers and branded fuel stations across the United States. It runs what it calls the nation's largest refining system, with 13 refineries spread across the Gulf Coast, Mid-Continent and West Coast. Its fuel reaches drivers under the Marathon and ARCO brands, and it co-owns a California plant with Neste that makes renewable diesel from fats and plant oils. The company earns most of its money selling refined fuels, while its controlled partnership MPLX gathers, processes and moves natural gas, crude oil and fuel. Marathon Petroleum traces its roots to 1887 and is based in Findlay, Ohio.

What believers are saying

  • Profits are strong: MPC reported $5.1 billion of second-quarter net income, or $17.73 per share, in August 2026.
  • Union pay is set: Marathon's February 2026 national deal gives USW hourly workers 15% raises over four years.
  • Scale offers varied roles: about 18,500 employees work across refining, fuel marketing and midstream operations.

What critics are saying

  • Labor ties are strained: Marathon locked out about 120 Martinez union workers in June 2026 after an April strike.
  • Long-term fuel demand is exposed: its 10-K lists alternative-fuel vehicles and laws mandating them as business risks.
  • Profits ride fuel spreads: its refining margin jumped from $17.58 to $36.33 a barrel in one year.

What makes Marathon Petroleum unique

  • It runs the largest U.S. refining system: 13 refineries with about 3 million barrels a day of capacity.
  • A gas business sits beside refining: its MPLX partnership has 8.1 billion cubic feet of daily gas-processing capacity.
  • It also makes renewable diesel: its Martinez, California plant, a 50/50 venture with Neste, converted from crude refining.

Marathon named a Top company for Women to Work in Trucking.

Marathon named a Top company for Women to Work in Trucking. Oct 20 2026 Operations & Marketing This marks the fifth consecutive year the company has earned the designation. Marathon Petroleum Corp. (MPC) has been included in Women In Trucking's (WIT) 2026 list of Top Companies to Work in Trucking. The recognition highlights companies across the commercial freight transportation marketplace that are creating workplaces where all employees can build careers, lead and grow, according to a statement from Marathon. MPC was selected through a two-step process that includes a review of nominated companies based on key criteria, including a corporate culture of inclusion, competitive compensation and benefits, flexible hours and work requirements, professional development opportunities and career advancement opportunities. The nomination was then validated by an industrywide vote involving more than 18,000 trucking professionals, including executive management, operations, safety, HR and talent management executives, and professional drivers. This is the fifth straight year MPC has earned the recognition. MPC also was named to "The Elite 30," which recognizes the 30 companies that generated the highest number of industrywide votes in the program. "This recognition program highlights the trucking industry leaders that are making meaningful investments in building more inclusive and supportive workplaces," said Brian Everett, group publisher and editorial director of Redefining the Road magazine. "Recognizing these companies celebrates the progress they've made and the positive example they continue to set for the industry." The list includes motor carriers, third-party logistics companies and original equipment manufacturers. "This recognition is meaningful because it reflects the work our teams do every day to create an environment where members of our transport team, including drivers, can succeed safely, feel supported and see a long-term future in transportation," said Katie Meschede, Marathon Petroleum Transport Operations Director West. "Safety is the key to our operations, and that fundamental commitment goes hand in hand with building a culture where people have the resources, training and opportunities to grow." Industry recognition. As Marathon continues to receive industry accolades for its commitment to culture, it is simultaneously being recognized for safety. Last week, Marathon Petroleum's Garyville refinery in Louisiana was re-certified as a Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) Star site by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), continuing a designation Garyville has held since 1994. Garyville's history with VPP goes back even further. The refinery began working with OSHA in the 1980s as the agency developed the program and later became the first refinery in Louisiana to earn VPP Star status. Garyville remains among the longest-running VPP Star refineries in the country. VPP Star is OSHA's highest level of recognition for workplaces with comprehensive safety and health management systems and a strong commitment from employees and management. "Maintaining VPP Star status for 32 consecutive years reflects the dedication of every employee and contractor who works safely, looks out for one another, and continuously seeks opportunities to improve," said Holly Jackson, vice president of refining at the Garyville refinery. "This achievement demonstrates that safety remains a foundational commitment at Garyville and a key part of how we operate every day." This year's recertification included interviews with dozens of employees and contractors, refinery tours and a review of safety programs. Evaluators highlighted the pride and engagement of the workforce, and the initial review concluded with no findings or corrective actions.

Three US refiners to watch as fuel costs lift margins: Marathon Petroleum, HF Sinclair, PBF

Higher fuel costs are pushing up airfares, delivery fees, and trucking prices, and putting US refiners in focus. Simply Wall St highlights three that stand to gain when refining margins hold firm. HF Sinclair has about $31.2 billion in annual revenue, $27.7 billion of it from refining, and a market value of about $22.3 billion. The WTI 3-2-1 crack spread was around $59 per barrel in mid 2026, with several million barrels per day of global refining capacity offline. Marathon Petroleum earns about $144.6 billion from refining and marketing and has a market value near $134.3 billion. It is investing in refineries at Galveston Bay, Garyville, Robinson, and El Paso. PBF Energy has a market value near $10.1 billion and made about $34.4 billion from refining. It recently bought the Torrance hydrogen plants.

Diesel at $6.20 a gallon: Marathon leads five energy stocks set to gain

US diesel prices averaged $6.199 a gallon for the week of October 5, the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) said. That is down from a 2026 peak of $6.529 in late September but more than $2.50 above a year ago. A disruption to Strait of Hormuz shipping earlier this year cut global refined fuel exports. Refiners gain most. Marathon Petroleum's refining margin doubled to $36.33 a barrel in the second quarter, from $17.58 a year earlier. Integrated majors also benefit. Chevron's downstream earnings rose to $4.9 billion from $737 million, while ExxonMobil's refining and fuels earnings reached $4.1 billion, nearly double a year earlier. Pipeline firms Energy Transfer and Enterprise Products Partners earn mostly fees, so they get little direct lift. The EIA expects prices to stay high through October before easing.

Marathon refinery marks 32 years with safety distinction.

Marathon refinery marks 32 years with safety distinction. Oct 13 2026 Operations & Marketing The refinery has held the highest safety recognition since 1994. Marathon Petroleum's Garyville refinery in Louisiana has once again been re-certified as a Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) Star site by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), continuing a designation Garyville has held since 1994. This year's recertification included interviews with dozens of employees and contractors, refinery tours and a review of safety programs. Evaluators highlighted the pride and engagement of the workforce, and the initial review concluded with no findings or corrective actions. OSHA followed with a closer look at lessons learned from previous incidents and improvements made since. The review found Garyville continues to meet the high safety standards required for VPP Star status, recognizing its strong safety culture, ongoing improvements and commitment to protecting its workforce. "This recertification validates the strong safety culture that exists at Garyville and the innovative work being done across the refinery," said Jeremy Beasley, refining environmental, safety & security director at the Garyville refinery. "From Digital Transformation and Corrosion Management initiatives to improvements in energy isolation, emergency response and process safety, our workforce continues to find new ways to improve reliability and protect people. Achieving 32 years of VPP Star status is an accomplishment we should all be proud of."
