What believers are saying

  • August 10, 2026 brought a £17 million DRIVE35 grant for motor scale-up.
  • July 22, 2026 Sunderland expansion follows Hitachi Rail battery demand and Grand Central orders.
  • November 4, 2025 Fering and March 9, 2026 Minda validated Turntide’s powertrain platform.

What critics are saying

  • Hitachi Rail concentration makes 2026-2028 rail demand a single-point failure.
  • Project SUPREME must scale Gateshead and Cramlington manufacturing before January 2028.
  • If axial-flux production misses cost targets, Turntide burns cash against larger incumbents.

What makes Turntide unique

  • Turntide sells integrated axial-flux motors, inverters, and batteries across rail and off-highway markets.
  • Its Sunderland LFP rail batteries and Gateshead motors span both electrification and hybridization.
  • The Minda JV localizes Turntide technology for India’s EV powertrain market.

Turntide axial flux motors and inverters propel Fering's long-range, hybrid vehicle.

Turntide axial flux motors and inverters propel Fering's long-range, hybrid vehicle. Axial flux technology gave Fering the flexibility to integrate a powerful electric drivetrain into its rugged platform built for extreme range, demanding environments. Gateshead, U.K., Sept. 02, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) - Turntide Technologies (Turntide), a global leader in electrification and hybridization solutions, announced that Fering, a manufacturer of rugged off-road vehicles, selected Turntide axial flux motors and inverters for its hybrid vehicle. The compact size and high power density of the technology helped Fering develop a rugged vehicle designed for long range, off-road capability and flexible deployment across multiple sectors. Fering's vehicle uses a parallel hybrid system designed to support demanding duty cycles while maximizing efficiency and range. The propulsion system had to fit within the vehicle's existing architecture without compromising performance or capability. Turntide supplied Fering with a complete electric propulsion package consisting of: * Axial flux motor for traction * A motor for power generation * Inverters for motor control Turntide's motors provided the power density Fering needed while minimizing the space required within the vehicle. Turntide's application engineering team also worked closely with Fering during vehicle integration and testing to support successful implementation. "Fering's vehicle platform is a good example of how hybridization can extend electrification into demanding vehicle applications," said Brad Bell, chief commercial officer for Turntide. "The compact size and high performance of axial flux technology can help manufacturers integrate electric propulsion into existing vehicle platforms while delivering the performance and capability required for next-generation vehicles." Fering evaluated several axial flux motor suppliers during development before selecting Turntide because of the performance and reliability of its motors and the support of its engineering team. "It's a real pleasure to be working with Turntide Technologies," said Gareth Reece, chief commercial officer, Fering Technologies. "By bringing together Turntide's world-class electrification technology with Fering's innovative approach to extreme mobility, we're creating opportunities to deliver highly capable, efficient and resilient solutions for some of the world's most demanding environments. We look forward to building on this relationship and demonstrating what our combined technologies can achieve." About Turntide Technologies Turntide Technologies designs and manufactures best-in-class electric motors, power electronics and energy storage for anything that moves. Turntide Technologies operates in North America, the U.K. and India and serves customers in global markets and industries including off highway automotive, commercial vehicles, rail, marine, light vehicles and premium automotive. Turntide wins $21.6M UK grant to scale axial flux motor production

Turntide Technologies has been selected for a £17 million UK Government grant project to accelerate volume production of axial flux motors. The matched-funded Project SUPREME is part of the government's £4 billion DRIVE35 programme, delivered by the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade with the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK and Innovate UK. The 18-month project, running through January 2028, will automate labour-intensive production processes for axial flux motors, which are more compact and powerful than conventional designs but historically difficult to manufacture at scale. Turntide will expand its Gateshead facility and reestablish a component facility in Cramlington, Northumberland, securing job growth in North East England whilst meeting growing global demand for efficient electric powertrains across automotive and industrial applications.

Turntide to expand high-voltage rail battery production at its Sunderland site.

Turntide to expand high-voltage rail battery production at its Sunderland site. Expansion at this facility is required to meet the rising demand for high-voltage, LFP battery systems for the rail industry. Driven by demand from Hitachi Rail, following the recent production milestone, and the growth of hybrid rail operations globally, Turntide Technologies (Turntide) is expanding its high-voltage lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) rail battery systems manufacturing line to the Turntide Sunderland facility. The high-voltage battery system enables hybrid and tri-mode trains to operate on both electrified and non-electrified rail lines while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. This LFP battery system allows for lower cost of operations, extended range, and a path to zero-emission travel, while reducing reliance on fossil fuels and improving air quality and noise pollution. It will be manufactured exclusively at the Sunderland location. This battery production is an advanced manufacturing milestone for Arriva's Grand Central new fleet, which is being built by Hitachi Rail in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham. "The global rail industry is moving quickly toward hybrid and tri-mode platforms as operators look for practical ways to reduce emissions, improve efficiency, and extend the reach of electrified rail networks," Steve Hornyak, CEO, Turntide, said. "Its continued collaboration with Hitachi Rail reflects the strength of this market demand and the confidence in Turntide's high-voltage LFP battery technology. "Expanding production at Sunderland gives us the capacity, capability, and operational focus to support this next phase of growth while helping accelerate cleaner, more flexible rail transportation." The Sunderland facility provides the manufacturing space and testing capabilities to support Turntide's growing production of LFP battery systems. Paul Turbitt, senior director of strategic operations at Turntide, will oversee the Sunderland facility and this manufacturing expansion. About Turntide.
