About the company

Bank of America runs one of the largest US banks, serving consumers, small businesses, wealthy families, corporations and institutional investors. Customers reach it through thousands of branches and ATMs and its mobile banking app. It earns money mainly from the gap between what it charges on loans and pays on deposits, plus fees from advice, asset management, deal work and trading. Bank of America fined $1.2B over money laundering and sanctions violations

The US Treasury has fined Bank of America $1.2 billion for violating anti-money laundering and sanctions laws. It is the third largest penalty in financial crimes history. The Treasury said the bank failed to mitigate and report national security risks, including Chinese money laundering networks and illicit finance along the Southwest border. It also violated sanctions programmes covering Iran, Russia, narcotics, and global terrorism. Bank of America admitted wrongdoing and said it is investing billions of dollars in technology to prevent further violations. Its third quarter results will include a non-tax deductible charge of $1.2 billion, cutting net income by about 17 cents per share. Regulators will not cap the bank's asset size. They are requiring it to work with a third party to identify unreported violations. Treasury Secretary Scott Besent said the action shows "even the biggest financial institutions are not above the law.
