  • Training or experience in Motivational Interviewing, including the ability to address ambivalence, build intrinsic motivation, and support people in identifying their goals.
  • Ability to lead interactions with Unconditional Positive Regard, cultural humility, and sensitivity to the lived experiences of those served.
  • Personal or professional experience with the child welfare system or other social impact work, or a strong commitment to learning about these systems; approach the work with humility, curiosity, and willingness to grow alongside served communities.
  • Commitment to centering the voices and experiences of people with lived experience throughout the work.
  • Experience with data entry and documentation in case management, CRM, or tracking systems, including accurate and timely data practices.
  • Willingness to explore, apply, and adapt digital tools to improve efficiency, expand reach, and serve families, balancing technology with critical thinking and human-centered evaluation.
  • Familiarity with California's child welfare system, county structures, or specific state programs.
  • A bachelor's degree in social work, counseling, human services, or a related field is required; relevant lived experience and demonstrated professional competency may be considered in lieu of or in addition to formal education.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as a consistent, trusted point of contact for transition-age youth and kinship families, building ongoing relationships beyond a single interaction or referral cycle through phone, text, email, and digital platforms.
  • Build and sustain relationships with California community partners to enable warm referrals and collaborative problem-solving on behalf of families.
  • Deploy micro-cash grants as an engagement and stabilization tool, using these touchpoints to deepen trust, reduce barriers to participation, and capture structured data on family need.
  • Activate crisis support protocols when needed by using ConnectMe to identify appropriate resources and coordinate with relevant partners for timely, stabilizing care.
  • Conduct comprehensive, Motivational Interviewing-informed needs assessments using ConnectMe's smart intake tools, applying trauma-informed and culturally responsive practice to understand each person's situation, priorities, and goals.
  • Recognize and respond to change talk, assess readiness to engage, and adjust navigation strategies in real time.
  • Identify resource-landscape gaps through direct service interactions and flag emerging needs and systemic barriers to inform strategy, advocacy, and resource development.
  • Collect and document user feedback and satisfaction data to understand what is working for individuals and for the platform.
  • Manage an active caseload across multiple stages of the care journey by monitoring progress, identifying emerging needs, and adjusting navigation strategies as circumstances evolve.
  • Co-develop individualized action plans with each person served and use ConnectMe to track progress, flag pivots, and update plans as circumstances change.
  • Guide individuals through transitions to community partners, service providers, and government programs; confirm connections, troubleshoot barriers, and ensure follow-through.
  • Help individuals navigate complex systems by using ConnectMe to streamline applications, clarify eligibility, and explain bureaucratic processes.
  • Use ConnectMe's technology-assisted directory to match individuals with relevant, culturally responsive services and assess whether those resources are accessible, accurate, and responsive.
  • Support individuals facing barriers to digital access or literacy and flag accessibility gaps to the innovation team.
  • Implement and scale ConnectMe tools, including technology-assisted intake, automated follow-up, chatbots, and digital referral workflows, as an active participant in the evolving practice model.
  • Document what works, what does not, and why by capturing real-time insights that drive iteration of the platform and practice model, including structured feedback on usability, accuracy, and user experience.
  • Contribute lived-experience and human-centered design perspectives to product and innovation work by participating in design reviews and usability sessions.
  • Help codify and formalize technology-enabled practices that increase capacity, scale high-quality support, and generate intelligence that strengthens service delivery and systems-change efforts.
  • Capture real-time lived-experience data in case notes on navigation interactions, documenting needs, barriers, outcomes, and opportunities to inform service improvement and policy recommendations.
  • Enter data accurately and on time in compliance with established protocols, privacy standards, and ethical guidelines.
  • Participate in team debriefs, learning sessions, and case consultations, contributing frontline insights to organizational learning and deliverables such as a Theory of Change, Logic Model, and updated Program Manual.
  • Collaborate with the Innovation and Tech team to surface systemic barriers, generate policy-relevant insights, and contribute to a model for using VSS-generated data in state and national advocacy.
Desired Qualifications
  • Bilingual ability in Spanish, both written and verbal.
  • Motivational Interviewing training, foundational or advanced; training is expected within the first 90 days of employment.

About the company

Think of Us is a nonprofit research and design lab reforming the U.S. child welfare system through partnerships with government, lawmakers, and foundations to design and implement scalable, data-driven solutions at federal, state, and local levels. It centers the lived experiences of foster youth and families and uses technology, data, and design to address root causes such as poverty-related neglect, promote kinship care, and support youth aging out. Its Virtual Support Services provide housing, mental health, and employment resources, and its COVID-19 response helped families access over $50 million in resources and disburse $400 million in federal relief for former foster youth. Funding comes from grants and philanthropic partnerships, including a major $47.5 million Audacious Project commitment with a goal to raise $100 million.

What believers are saying

  • May 2026 Hilton Foundation gave $1.53 million for federal foster care implementation.
  • June 2026 Texas kinship micro-grants show productized support still reaches caregivers.
  • August 2026 donation pages said nearly $50 million committed toward the $100 million campaign.

What critics are saying

  • Grant dependence concentrates risk; Audacious Project funding ends after 2028 if fundraising stalls.
  • Child welfare reforms depend on ACF, HUD, and state adoption cycles, slowing impact.
  • If philanthropic renewals weaken, Think of Us loses operating runway and scale.

What makes Think of Us unique

  • Sixto Cancel built Think of Us from foster-care lived experience, not academic theory.
  • May 2026 Christine Norbut Beyer joined, strengthening federal child welfare implementation credibility.
  • Think of Us combines research, technology, policy, and direct kinship-cash pilots.
