About the company

Amazon runs the largest online store in the United States and rents cloud computing to businesses and governments through Amazon Web Services. AWS pioneered renting computing power over the internet, and Amazon built its own delivery network to get orders to customers quickly. Shoppers buy from Amazon and from independent sellers on its store, and Prime members pay a subscription for fast free shipping, streaming video and music, and other perks. AWS rents out computing power, storage, databases, and AI tools so companies can run software without owning servers, and Amazon also makes Kindle e-readers and Echo speakers with the Alexa assistant. Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994, and it is based in Seattle, Washington.

What believers are saying

  • AI drives growth: AWS's AI and custom-chip sales each more than doubled, passing $25 billion a year by June 2026.
  • Stock grants gained value: shares hit a record in August 2026, making Amazon the fifth company to reach $3 trillion.
  • Ads are a third engine beside stores and AWS: they grew 26% to $19.8 billion in the June 2026 quarter.

What critics are saying

  • AWS's lead is shrinking: in the June 2026 quarter, Google Cloud grew 82% and Microsoft's Azure 43%, versus AWS's 37%.
  • Job security has slipped: Amazon cut 30,000 corporate jobs in October 2025 and January 2026 to reduce management layers.
  • Expect five office days a week: Amazon ended its three-day hybrid policy for corporate staff in January 2025.

What makes Amazon unique

  • Most of Amazon's profit comes from cloud: AWS made 21% of sales but 60% of operating profit in mid-2026.
  • Amazon is America's biggest parcel carrier by volume: it handled 6.9 billion packages in 2025, more than the Postal Service.
  • Writing matters more than slides: Amazon meetings open with silent reading of a six-page memo instead of PowerPoint.

Generac's Amazon backup power deal tests its data center ramp-up with $1.6B backlog

Generac Holdings has signed a long-term backup power agreement with Amazon, with data center deliveries planned for 2027 and 2028. Investors will watch the next earnings report for shipment timing, factory capacity and how much of the backlog turns into sales. Generac must scale high-megawatt production while keeping margins and capital spending in check. The deal sits alongside about $450 million of expected 2026 data center revenue and a $1.6 billion dedicated backlog. Analysts' central forecast points to revenue of $7.8 billion and earnings of $918.4 million by 2029, up from $258.2 million today. The main risk is that spending on capacity, including the Belvidere plant, runs ahead of actual orders and squeezes free cash flow.

AWS makes 60% of Amazon's $16B-plus profit mix, but is the stock still a safe buy?

Amazon Web Services (AWS), not e-commerce, now drives most of Amazon's profit, which challenges the stock's reputation as a safe bet for cautious investors. AWS made up 21% of Amazon's second-quarter sales but 60% of its operating income. Its sales rose 37%, the fastest pace in more than four years, and it reached a $169 billion annualised revenue run rate. AWS earned $16 billion in operating income on $42 billion in sales, while North America earned about $9 billion on $116 billion. Amazon plans $220 billion in capital expenditure this year. Free cash flow for the trailing 12 months turned negative, at an outflow of $7.6 billion, against an inflow of more than $18 billion a year earlier. The stock trades at 29x forward earnings, down from more than 34x a few months ago. Third-quarter results are due October 29.

Amazon shares rise 0.63% as Anthropic filing shows $110B in commitments

Amazon shares rose 0.63% to $249.56 on Monday at 10:10 EST, as Anthropic's public IPO filing drew fresh attention to Amazon's role as both investor and computing supplier. Reuters previously reported that Anthropic committed at least $110 billion to Amazon under long-term infrastructure agreements. Such commitments take time to turn into revenue. In the second quarter, Amazon's sales climbed 20% to $200.6 billion, and AWS revenue rose 37% to $42.2 billion. Earnings included $53.4 billion in non-operating pretax income, mainly from Anthropic investments. Heavier AI infrastructure spending pushed trailing 12-month free cash flow to negative $7.6 billion. The shares sit 1.12% below the GF Value estimate of $252.39.

Amazon's Jassy says AI inference is 10x too costly, bets on own chips amid $220B capex

Amazon chief executive officer Andy Jassy says AI inference is still "an order of magnitude too expensive" for widespread use. On The a16z Show, he said Amazon's chips business is "a big piece" of the fix. Jassy sees the biggest future demand in everyday business software that has yet to adopt AI. Amazon built its Graviton processor after similar problems with Intel, and Trainium follows that path. Jassy said Trainium offers 30% to 40% better price-performance than comparable processors. The stakes are high. Amazon expects about $220 billion of capex in 2026, and its free cash flow was a $7.6 billion outflow over the 12 months to June 30, 2026. Amazon reports third-quarter results on October 29.
