Requirements
  • Previous experience as a tank barge person in charge on oil barges, with at least 5 years of tanking experience.
  • A valid Person in Charge endorsement and United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential with Tankerman Person in Charge endorsement.
  • Valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, First Aid, and Automated External Defibrillator training and certificate.
  • Valid Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response 24-hour training and current certificate.
  • A valid state driver's license.
  • Knowledge of Coast Guard and state requirements for transfer operations.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations such as oil spills and mechanical failures.
  • Ability to communicate by voice and/or visual hand signals.
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
  • Knowledge of company safety practices.
  • Ability to maintain professional relations with customers.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Ability to complete accurate paperwork.
  • Ability to read, speak, and understand English over the telephone and/or radio.
  • Physical ability and stamina to maneuver cargo hoses, handle barge lines, and board vessels using an accommodation ladder, Jacob's ladder, or tugboat.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions and at heights.
  • Ability to work varied schedules, including weekends, holidays, nights, and call-outs.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug testing.
Responsibilities
  • Monitor product levels in tanks; operate diesel engines, cargo pumps, cargo gear, tank and pipeline valves, gate valves, butterfly valves, and manual and hydraulic booms.
  • Load 55-gallon drums.
  • Adjust and secure barge lines.
  • Communicate with foreign crews and oil facility personnel.
  • Complete loading and discharge gauge reports.
  • Inspect vessels for Coast Guard and state regulatory compliance.
  • Use air-purifying respirators, self-contained breathing apparatus, air-monitoring equipment, hearing protection, VHF radios, hand tools, tow lines, high-level alarms, and thermometers.
  • Check oil and water in onboard equipment before putting it into use.
  • Perform general barge maintenance and maintain cleanliness.
  • Conduct hydrostatic testing of cargo hoses and piping.
  • Change engine oil and filters.
  • Splice barge lines and boom running gear.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
