Requirements
  • BLS certification.
  • Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program or eligibility to sit for the certification test.
  • Excellent communication and listening skills, the ability to work collaboratively in a team, and the flexibility to prioritize and adapt in stressful situations.
  • Ability to apply sterile and aseptic technique and knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, equipment, instrumentation, supplies, and implementation tools and technologies.
Responsibilities
  • Check the surgery schedule for the shift and review procedure cards for required supplies and instruments.
  • Perform surgical counts with the circulator before operations and at appropriate intervals according to policy.
  • Assist with gowning and gloving the surgeon and assistants and drape the sterile field.
  • Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon or assistant while maintaining sterile technique during procedures.
  • Prepare sterile dressings and clean and prepare instruments for transport to sterile processing.
  • Assist team members with room turnovers within established timelines and complete end-of-day procedures.
  • Escalate equipment or supply concerns through the appropriate mechanism to CTS, CSPD, or materials management.
  • Respond appropriately as directed during code or emergency situations.
  • Provide patient comfort, safety, privacy, and respect in the perioperative setting.
  • Collaborate with nursing, anesthesia, surgeons, and other surgical team members on issues and concerns.
  • Report incidents and errors verbally and in writing according to established procedures while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Participate in projects, committees, orientation, and teaching of area-specific skills.
  • Serve as a resource for staff members, students, and residents and complete required educational programs.
  • Follow organizational policies, procedures, patient-safety initiatives, and the OHSU Code of Conduct.
  • Use surgical-unit resources responsibly and promote cost containment.
