Requirements
  • PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Operations Research, Economics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related quantitative field — or MS with a demonstrable track record of independent research output (publications, patents, or equivalent deployed systems)
  • Hands-on experience implementing and evaluating deep reinforcement learning algorithms; fluency in policy gradient methods (PPO, TRPO, SAC), value-based approaches (DQN variants, IQL), and the tradeoffs between model-free and model-based reinforcement learning
  • Experience building reinforcement learning training environments; demonstrated ability to translate complex real-world operational processes into tractable Markov decision process formulations with appropriate state/action/reward design
  • Production-quality Python; deep learning frameworks (PyTorch); version control, testing, and reproducibility practices expected of research code that ships into production systems
  • A demonstrated ability to operate in a fast-moving environment where problem definitions evolve, priorities shift, and hands-on technical contribution — not just research direction — is expected at all levels
Responsibilities
  • Translate complex operational processes into well-defined research problems; identify the right modeling approach for each domain and build the case for why it will work in practice
  • Build simulation environments that faithfully represent our operational processes — construction scheduling, portfolio sequencing, security operations — and can be used to train, evaluate, and iterate on decision-making models
  • Design rigorous experiments, maintain reproducible codebases, and communicate results clearly in internal reports and, where the research warrants it, external publications
  • Develop models that optimize construction scheduling across multiple concurrent sites — minimizing schedule variance, resource idle time, and cascading delays across a growing fleet of projects
  • Design approaches that adapt scheduling decisions in real time to disruptions — supply chain delays, labor fluctuations, permitting hold-ups — learning from historical project data to improve over time
  • Build models that inform how we sequence site development and allocate capital across a growing fleet — accounting for regulatory milestones, capital constraints, and correlated risks across sites
  • Develop approaches that account for uncertainty in key inputs — permitting timelines, cost distributions, grid demand forecasts — to produce portfolio decisions with bounded downside
  • Build models for alert prioritization, anomaly detection, and patrol scheduling that support physical and cyber security operations across a distributed multi-site infrastructure
  • Design systems where models and human analysts share decision authority appropriately — communicating uncertainty clearly and degrading safely when operating outside familiar conditions
  • Collaborate with engineering to define how models are served, monitored, updated, and overridden in production — ensuring deployed systems are reliable, maintainable, and trusted by the teams that use them
  • Present research results and system performance to operations, security, and leadership stakeholders; translate findings into actionable operational recommendations
Desired Qualifications
  • Offline / Batch Reinforcement Learning methods such as IQL, CQL, TD3+BC, Decision Transformer, or similar — relevant given limited online interaction in deployment environments
  • Graph neural networks for scheduling or routing (Graph Convolutional Networks, attention-based) or neural combinatorial optimization or hybrid learned/exact solver approaches
  • Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning methods such as MADDPG, QMIX, MAPPO
  • Stochastic or robust optimization approaches like CVaR-constrained reinforcement learning, distributionally robust Markov Decision Processes, or chance-constrained programming for decision-making under uncertainty
  • Production Reinforcement Learning deployment experience including monitoring and retraining RL systems post-deployment, distribution shift detection, and safe policy update procedures
  • Construction project management, infrastructure operations, energy industry, electricity markets, nuclear power, industrial control systems, or physical/cyber security for critical infrastructure domain exposure
  • Game theory familiarity with frameworks for strategic interactions, mechanism design, adversarial dynamics, or equilibrium concepts
  • Behavioral science understanding of decision-making biases and uncertainty responses
  • Research program leadership experience with ownership of a research program and ability to define scope and methodology under uncertainty
  • Publications at top-tier venues and experience guiding a team’s external research agenda
  • Experience mentoring PhD-level researchers or interns and guiding experimental design and problem formulation
  • Cross-functional technical leadership including research architecture decisions spanning research and engineering and communicating with non-technical stakeholders

Brad Buss joins The Nuclear Company board as independent director and audit chair

Buss brings nearly three decades of experience in technology, infrastructure, and clean energy sectors, having participated in over $65 billion of capital markets activity. The Nuclear Company launches NOS Security platform to protect US nuclear infrastructure

The Nuclear Company has launched NOS Security, a next-generation security platform designed to protect nuclear energy infrastructure across the United States and allied nations. The system combines AI-enabled monitoring, autonomous drones, robotics, advanced sensing, cyber defence and real-time intelligence into a single platform. Led by Mike Marty, former head of security for Tesla Gigafactory operations, and Edward "Lee" Doby, who previously led security programmes at Southern Nuclear's Vogtle Units 3 and 4, the platform addresses growing threats including drone attacks and cyber-physical warfare targeting critical infrastructure. Summer nuclear project COLUMBIA, S.C., and NEW YORK, May 4, 2026 /CNW/ - Brookfield, a leading global investment firm, and The Nuclear Company ("TNC"), a nuclear project development and delivery company, today announced a partnership to form a new company specializing in the development of Westinghouse nuclear reactor technology. The partnership's ambition is to establish a world-leading nuclear project execution company. Brookfield's global asset management and energy infrastructure development capabilities combined with TNC's nuclear project delivery expertise will serve as the foundation for the dedicated project development company. The business will offer execution capabilities for the deployment of nuclear projects based exclusively on Westinghouse reactor technology, including AP1000 and AP300, in addition to end-to-end project management, licensing support, and oversight of engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning activity.
