Ashland is a diversified specialty chemicals company that originated as an oil refinery in 1924 and gradually shifted into chemicals, construction, and coal before fully reinventing itself as a pure-play specialty chemicals provider. Its products serve the personal care, pharmaceutical, and coatings markets. The company operates by developing and supplying chemical ingredients used in formulations across these industries, rather than delivering consumer finished goods. Compared with competitors, Ashland focuses on specialty chemical ingredients with an emphasis on performance materials and advanced additives, supported by a history of strategic acquisitions and spin-offs that steered it away from refining into differentiated chemical solutions. The company’s goal is to grow as a leading supplier of high-value, specialty ingredients by applying chemistry to improve the performance and quality of its customers’ products.

Ashland launches Forzango condurango bark extract for skin health. The cosmeceutical ingredient is formulated to support the skin's detoxification process, antimicrobial activity, and barrier function. October 8, 2026 Associate Editor, Nutraceuticals World Ashland Inc. announced the launch of Forzango Biofunctional, an active ingredient obtained by supercritical CO2 extraction from traceable, ethically-sourced, and abundant condurango bark, to support skin health. The ingredient addresses concerns about the impact that sweat, physical stress, and sun exposure can have on skin health. "The old assumption was that active living came at your skin's expense. The new one is that they're on the same side," said Eloïse Dewitte, global marketing lead for biofunctionals. "Our customers are formulating for people who train, commute, travel and go out, often on the same day. What they need isn't skin repair after the fact, it's skin with endurance." According to Ashland, the ingredient supports the skin's detoxification process; increases mitochondrial complex IV production in the skin; strengthens skin barrier function/microbial defense; and increases biological signals related to skin comfort. Clinical results were obtained on a mixed panel of 30 men and women, against placebo - a deliberately unisex protocol for a deliberately unisex claim. After six weeks, fine lines, roughness and signs of oxygenation significantly improved, 80 percent of volunteers agreed their skin felt more comfortable and 60 percent found it looked smoother. Forzango biofunctional is obtained by supercritical CO2 extraction from condurango bark (Marsdenia condurango), a vigorous liana that climbs Andean trees to reach the light and thrives at 1,400 to 2,100 meters, adapting to low oxygen levels. Its name comes from condur-angu, "eagle remedy." The ingredient is the result of a ten-year sourcing program implemented by a trusted partner of Ashland in Colombia and the first foreign initiative to obtain a bioprospection research permit in the country. Traditionally wild-harvested, condurango was domesticated through a dedicated cultivation project in the Valle del Cauca, with seeds and nurseries certified by the Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario. Ten smallholder farmers now grow it under multi-year contracts with technical training, organic-farming practices and fair pricing, under an ABS-compliant benefit-sharing agreement aligned with the 12 criteria of negocios verdes. "Relieving pressure on a wild resource while creating real economic value for local growers was the only acceptable way to build this supply chain," said Frédéric Faugeroux, general manager of biofunctionals. "It's traceable, ethical and abundant." Forzango is oil-soluble, preservative-free and recommended at one percent use level. The ingredient is 100% natural origin (ISO 16128), COSMOS-approved, readily biodegradable (OECD 301D), vegan, non-GMO, and China-compliant (IECIC listed). Ashland recommends use across active consumer products including pre-workout face primers and sport SPF sticks, cooling recovery mists and gel-creams, anti-friction body balms, and daily endurance serums, barrier creams and post-shave care. Ashland Inc. launches agrimer? Eco-Disperse OD TVO? Polymeric dispersant. Published on 09/22/2026 at 11:45 am EDT S&P Capital IQ Ashland Inc. announced the global launch of agrimer? eco-disperse OD TVO? polymeric dispersant, a patented, nature-based dispersant developed for non-aqueous crop protection formulations. The introduction represents the latest commercial innovation from the TVO? platform. Agrimer? eco-disperse OD was engineered so agrochemical formulators could address the growing industry challenge of delivering high-performance formulations while advancing sustainability goals and meeting increasingly complex regulatory expectations. The new polymeric dispersant enables effective stabilization and uniform dispersion of water-insoluble active ingredients, helping improve formulation performance, stability and application efficiency. The technology offers nature-based, inherently biodegradable and microplastic-free attributes that support the transition toward more environmentally responsible crop protection products. Derived from transformed vegetable oil, agrimer? eco-disperse OD helps improve dispersion stability, enhance leaf adhesion, coverage and rain fastness. The technology reduces common formulation challenges such as active ingredient settling and nozzle clogging, helping customers improve product consistency and field performance. Its broad formulation compatibility, ease of use and competitive cost-in-use profile provide additional flexibility for formulators developing suspension concentrates and other non-aqueous formulations. Ashland has launched permexa sodium caprate, an intestinal permeation enhancer designed to support the development and commercialisation of oral peptide and biologic drug products, including GLP-1 agonists. The excipient addresses key challenges in oral drug delivery by combining permeability enhancement with improved manufacturing properties such as powder flow and compressibility. The launch responds to growing pharmaceutical investment in oral alternatives to injectable therapies, driven by patient convenience and treatment adherence benefits. Prior to the commercial launch, Ashland recorded engagement with multiple pharmaceutical, biotech, and contract development organisations globally through sampling activities and formulation development discussions. Ashland plans further expansion of its oral biologics portfolio. The company has additional products in development and intends to leverage synergies with its existing vinyl pyrrolidone and derivatives portfolio to strengthen its position in the oral biologics delivery market.
