About the company

Travertine Technologies develops a climatetech process that removes carbon dioxide and recovers critical metals from mining waste. Its method uses sulfate waste from mining to produce sulfuric acid, which then leaches valuable metals from mine tailings. The same process mineralizes CO2, permanently sequestering it as carbonate. This creates a circular approach that turns waste into useful products and lowers emissions in mining, fertilizer, and cement industries. The company aims to scale its technology for commercial use, supported by a demonstration plant and funding, and to drive industrial decarbonization and resource recovery by offering a combined solution of waste valorization and carbon removal.

What believers are saying

  • June 2026 Arianne pilot confirmed Travertine-made purified phosphoric acid and advanced a demonstration plant.
  • October 2025 New York demo plant uses Frontier, NYSERDA, and Builders Vision support.
  • 2026 customer samples and Amrize visibility signal expanding commercial pull beyond pilots.

What critics are saying

  • Only 125 tonnes annual sulfuric acid today; commercial phosphate plants need orders-of-magnitude more capacity.
  • Arianne's Quebec project and 2026 customer sampling still lack binding large-volume offtake agreements.
  • If electrochemical scaling slips before 2028, Travertine remains a science project, not infrastructure.

What makes Travertine unique

  • Travertine's Rochester demo plant started October 2025, running continuously on specification products.
  • It decouples sulfuric acid supply from oil-and-gas sulfur, unlike conventional sulfur burning.
  • Its Arianne Phosphate JV targets purified phosphoric acid, cement, and battery-grade outputs.

Travertine wins second place at the Colorado Mining Cleantech Challenge.

Travertine wins second place at the Colorado Mining Cleantech Challenge. PR Log, August 28, 2026 Colorado Cleantech announced the winners of its 10th Annual Mining Cleantech Challenge, held August 27 at the Governor's Residence in Denver. The event brought together mining leaders, technology innovators, investors, and industry partners to evaluate solutions designed to make mining safer, cleaner, more efficient, and more productive. Second place was awarded to Travertine Technologies for advancing a circular, carbon-negative electrochemical platform that transforms mining and fertilizer waste into valuable products. Its technology can recycle sulfate byproducts into sulfuric acid and other materials while permanently mineralizing carbon dioxide. The 2026 Mining Cleantech Challenge was supported by Sumitomo Corporation, Royal Gold, Fresnillo, Fortescue, Anglo American, and other industry partners whose expertise helped guide the competitive review and evaluation process.

Arianne Phosphate executes agreement for PPA plant.

Arianne Phosphate executes agreement for PPA plant. Arianne Phosphate Inc., a development-stage phosphate mining company advancing the Lac à Paul project in Quebec's Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region, in Canada, has announced that it has entered into an option agreement for a facility to be used in the production of purified phosphoric acid (PPA). Arianne Phosphate and Travertine Technologies have partnered to produce PPA, combining Arianne's high-purity phosphate concentrate with Travertine's proprietary acid production process. Situated in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region, the option covers a portion of the infrastructure operated by Énergie Milot, a producer of thermal energy from forest biomass. Located within the Saint-Ludger-de-Milot industrial park, the site has full access to the utilities required for the proper operation of the project. "The demonstration plant is a first step towards greater production capacity," said Raphael Gaudreault, COO of Arianne Phosphate. "By increasing the scale of production, Arianne and Travertine can show the effectiveness of the process and produce enough end-product to secure future customers. This fits with Arianne's goal of expanding beyond being a miner of phosphate to becoming a downstream provider of purified phosphoric acid." Arianne and Travertine have been working together to produce PPA on a laboratory scale with results expected in the coming weeks. Purified phosphoric acid has historically been used as a food additive and is also required for pharmaceuticals and semiconductor production. More recently, PPA demand has been accelerating due to its use in lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries with shortages projected in the coming years as more EVs are produced and Energy Storage Systems (ESS) deployed. In particular, demand for energy is accelerating, fuelled by the rapid growth of data centres pushed by AI. The power necessary for these data centres will be increasingly dependent on ESS. Currently, these build-outs are reliant on access to LFP batteries, a market that China dominates with over 95% of all production. The ability to produce PPA is greatly determined by the quality of the phosphate concentrate used as the input. Arianne's phosphate deposit is geologically rare (igneous) allowing it to produce a very high-purity/low-contaminant concentrate that is easily upgraded to PPA. The company's Lac à Paul project hosts the world's largest greenfield deposit and is the only permitted phosphate mine in the West. Arianne's project is a necessary piece as geopolitics continue to push companies and governments to evaluate their supply chains. Arianne has also announced the retirement of Claude Lafleur from its Board of Directors. "On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to express my deep appreciation for his steadfast commitment over the past seven years," commented Marco Gagnon, Executive Chairman of the Board of Arianne Phosphate. "His contribution has been instrumental in the advancement of the project, and his judgment, rigor, and in-depth understanding of our challenges have greatly enriched our work and our decision-making. His contribution has left a lasting impact from which the company will continue to benefit." Embed article link: (copy the HTML code below):

Gulf disruption leaves miners scrambling for sulfur alternatives.

Gulf disruption leaves miners scrambling for sulfur alternatives. Sulfur, a by-product of the oil & gas industry, is used to make sulfuric acid, which is essential for processing critical minerals such as phosphate, rare earths, nickel, copper, etc. With 24% of global sulfur supply stopped, prices have more than tripled, supply chains around the globe are broken, and miners are looking for alternatives. Travertine's electrochemical sulfuric acid process decouples production from sulfur supply and is lower cost than conventional sulfur burning technology. With a demonstration plant in 24/7 operation in New York making 180 T/y sulfuric acid, Travertine stands ready to build a commercial scale plant to free the critical minerals industry from oil & gas sulfur dependence.
