Caterpillar's construction growth now leans on dealer rental fleet loading, not merchandising programmes

Caterpillar's construction equipment demand drivers have shifted significantly over the past two years. The company previously attributed Construction Industries growth to merchandising programmes, which management credited for 5% full-year sales growth in 2025. Now, rental fleet loading — machines purchased by dealers for their rental operations — has become the primary growth driver. Construction Industries sales to users rose 22% in the June 2026 quarter, marking the sixth consecutive quarter of growth. The segment generated $8.3 billion in Q2 2026, up 35% year-over-year. Construction Industries now accounts for approximately 34% of Caterpillar's $74.7 billion trailing-twelve-month revenue. Management also highlighted Major Projects, a Cat dealer-owned rental joint venture launched in June 2026, which serves large-scale infrastructure, energy, and data centre builds.

CAT stock: 12% annualised income via covered calls while waiting out slowdown

Caterpillar recently reported its first quarter with sales exceeding $20 billion and raised its full-year growth forecast. Despite this, CAT shares trade approximately 24% below their 52-week high at $811.29. A covered call strategy could generate roughly 12% annualised income for existing shareholders. The approach involves selling a call option expiring 17 September 2027 with a $940 strike price, about 16% above current levels. This generates approximately $10,798 in upfront premium per 100-share contract. If shares remain below $940 at expiry, investors keep both the premium and their shares. If CAT exceeds $940, shares are called away, resulting in roughly 27% annualised returns, though gains above the strike price are forfeited. The company maintains a $72 billion backlog, with management projecting mid- to high-teens sales growth for 2026.
