About the company

Mesabi Metallics is building a large-scale iron ore mining and processing plant in Nashwauk, Minnesota, to produce Direct-Reduction (DR) grade iron ore pellets for the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steel market. The plant aims to produce 7 million metric tons per year of high-iron, low-impurity DR-grade pellets, enabling domestic supply of feedstock for green steel production and reducing dependence on imported iron ore. The operation uses taconite ore beneficiation and direct-reduced iron processes in a modern pellet plant, serving the EAF segment that prefers energy-efficient, scrap-based steelmaking. The project, led by CEO Joe Broking and COO Larry Sutherland and financed by Essar Group, represents a major private investment in Minnesota and is intended to advance the region’s industrial development, support US steel supply chain security, and align with decarbonization goals through increased use of DR-grade pellets and potential green-steel pathways.

Midrex chosen for direct reduction at Mesabi Metallics' Iowa steel complex.

Midrex chosen for direct reduction at Mesabi Metallics' Iowa steel complex. 14 Oct 2026 14:25 reported by Lily Nguyen Mesabi Metallics has selected Midrex Technologies, Inc. to supply the direct reduced iron (DRI) component of its planned electric arc furnace-based integrated steelmaking complex in Iowa, a US$15 billion investment. The facility is designed to produce up to 10 million tons of steel per year at full buildout, with a first phase of 7.5 million tons annually and one of the world's largest DRI complexes. The direct reduction section will use MIDREX Flex(TM) technology to produce hot direct reduced iron (HDRI) for direct feed to adjacent electric arc furnaces, as well as hot briquetted iron (HBI). The award builds on a relationship of more than three decades between Midrex and the Essar Group, Mesabi Metallics' sponsor, whose first MIDREX(TM) plant started up in India in 1990 and which went on to build and operate six MIDREX DRI modules as the base of a 10 million ton steel business. Mesabi selected Midrex because of its demonstrated operational expertise, leadership in DRI technology, adaptable solutions, and capacity to assist customers throughout project development and many years of plant operation. This combination minimizes technical and operational risks while offering flexibility to adapt to changes in feedstock, energy, and market conditions.

Midrex says Mesabi Metallics will use its DRI technology.

Midrex says Mesabi Metallics will use its DRI technology. Direct-reduced iron equipment producer Midrex Technologies says Mesabi Metallics has selected it as a vendor at a planned Iowa steelmaking complex. Published October 14, 2026 Charlotte, North Carolina-based Midrex Technologies Inc. says Mesabi Metallics has selected it as the supplier of direct-reduced iron (DRI) production equipment at a planned new electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking complex in Iowa. Minnesota-based Mesabi Metallics Co. LLC announced the planned $15 billion Iowa complex in late September, in a project that also involves the India-based Essar Group. According to Midrex, the Iowa facility could produce up to 10 million tons of steel annually, "which would make it the largest steel plant in American history, and its DRI complex would be one of the largest in the world." The DRI portion of the project will include Midrex Flex technology, producing hot DRI for direct feed to adjacent EAFs, as well as hot briquetted iron (HBI). "The project builds on a relationship of more than three decades between Midrex and the Essar Group, sponsor of Mesabi Metallics," states Midrex. Essar's first Midrex plant started up in India in 1990, and Essar went on to build and operate six Midrex DRI modules to help supply its 10 million tons per year steel business, says the technology vendor.

Trump's 'largest' jobs project hits embarrassing snag.

Trump's 'largest' jobs project hits embarrassing snag. October 06, 2026 | 07:49AM ET President Donald Trump said construction had already begun on a $15 billion steel plant in Iowa, which he called the largest in U.S. history; however, local records tell a different story. On September 28, Trump announced the Mesabi Metallics project from the Oval Office together with officials from Iowa and company executives. The White House described it as "the largest steel plant ever built in the United States", and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told reporters that there was no doubt regarding the project. "This deal is done," Lutnick said. "They've already worked it out." Trump went further, adding that "They've already started building." However, an investigation by Iowa television station KWQC found no major property acquisitions connected with the project in Lee County this year. The county authorities also stated that no permits had been submitted to the supervisors and that they had not obtained detailed plans from the company. The plant that has been proposed will create approximately 1,750 permanent jobs together with thousands of temporary construction jobs, Mesabi Metallics has stated, and production is expected to start in 2030. There are still a number of steps to go through before construction can start. Only a few days after Trump made his announcement, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds summoned the lawmakers back for a special session with the aim of extending the tax incentives offered to Mesabi. The Legislature eventually passed legislation that provided more than $1.3 billion in public funds and tax savings over a ten-year period. That made it difficult for Lutnick to stick to his belief that the deal was already completed. Debi Durham, who is the director of the Iowa Economic Development Authority, said that the special session would not have been necessary if Mesabi had agreed to construct the plant under Iowa's present incentive scheme. Some members of the Republican Party also objected to the price. "Do I believe the Iowa taxpayer received the best deal in this proposition? Absolutely not," Republican state Sen. Dan Dawson said. The full application from Mesabi still has to be approved by the Iowa Economic Development Authority before the state enters into a contract, and the chairwoman of the Lee County Board of Supervisors also stated that the company had not yet committed to a project site. Mesabi said it "looks forward to breaking ground in the near future." The company's history has introduced yet another complication. CBS News reported that both Mesabi and Essar have already failed to meet their deadlines and have not fulfilled the job plans they had announced. Although Essar announced in 2008 a $1.6 billion iron mine and steel mill in Minnesota, which was intended to produce more than 700 permanent jobs, the steel mill was never constructed. As late as July, job advertisements for the Mesabi company listed the proposed steel plant in Kentucky. At this time, even though Trump had stated that construction had already started, the project in Iowa still does not have a final site and must obtain further approvals from the state before building can begin.

Essar-backed Mesabi Metallics announces $18B steel complex investment in largest US project

Essar-backed Mesabi Metallics has announced an $18 billion investment to build a fully integrated steel company in the US, described as the largest single investment in a steel complex in American history. President Donald Trump revealed the plan at the White House. The investment comprises a proposed $15 billion integrated steel complex in Iowa and an existing $3 billion iron ore mine and pelletising facility in Minnesota. The Minnesota site is the first new iron ore mine built in the US in 50 years. The project aims to create a fully integrated American steel supply chain, from mining to production. Mesabi Metallics is owned by the Essar Group, a global conglomerate with over $30 billion in investments.

Iowa lawmakers vote on raising tax cap for $15B steel plant

Iowa lawmakers will vote Friday on expanding the state's tax incentive ceiling to secure a $15 billion steel plant project. President Donald Trump announced the plant Monday, with Republicans celebrating the promise of jobs for southeast Iowa. Governor Kim Reynolds called a special session, requesting changes to allow tax credits worth up to 10% of investments, increased from 5%, and paid over 10 years instead of five. For this project, that could mean up to $1.5 billion in kickbacks. The plant, proposed by Minnesota-based Mesabi Metallics, owned by India's Essar Group, would locate in Lee County, though the company hasn't committed to the site yet. The project's specific location and agreement terms remain undisclosed. Some express scepticism, citing Wisconsin's scaled-back Foxconn project, which received $3 billion in tax breaks but significantly reduced its employment promises.
