About the job

Requirements
  • A B.S. in Mechanical, Chemical, or Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • At least 5 years of progressive experience in propulsion design, propulsion manufacturing, or performance characterization, including at least 2 years focused on composite propellant systems for tactical applications.
  • Demonstrated technical authority on at least one tactical motor development or qualification program from formulation through full-scale testing.
  • Experience with knowledge of additive manufacturing and its application to propulsion components.
  • Proficiency in computational fluid dynamics tools such as ANSYS Fluent or STAR-CCM+ for coupled fluid-structural analysis.
  • Experience with solid rocket motor MIL-SPEC standards, STANAG 4170, and Department of Defense explosive safety regulations.
  • Familiarity with MATLAB, Python, or equivalent tools for data reduction and statistical analysis.
Responsibilities
  • Model ballistic performance for tactical motor configurations, including boost, sustain, and dual-thrust grain geometries used in surface-to-air, air-to-air, and ground-launched systems.
  • Develop and validate predictive models in SPP, CLWire, or equivalent tools, correlating strand burner and subscale motor data to full-scale performance with confidence bounds.
  • Characterize and model burn rate pressure exponent, temperature sensitivity, and erosive burning behavior across the operating temperature ranges required for tactical systems.
  • Lead ballistic anomaly investigations and author formal disposition packages.
  • Participate in motor performance margin analysis and support trade studies during proposal and preliminary and critical design review phases.
  • Perform advanced structural and thermal analyses using finite element analysis tools such as ANSYS, Abaqus, or NASTRAN to evaluate stress, strain, fatigue, vibration, buckling, and thermal loads under extreme operating conditions.
  • Design and execute characterization programs covering mechanical properties, including JANNAF strain invariant failure theory, uniaxial tensile testing, and stress relaxation; burn rate testing, including Crawford bomb and strand burner; and aging, including HTPB hydrolysis, AP recrystallization, and surveillance coupon programs.
  • Analyze and interpret test data with statistical rigor, author technical reports, and present findings to program leadership and government customers.
  • Serve as the technical point of contact for propellant-related contract data requirements lists and data submittals.
  • Provide day-to-day technical guidance to junior and mid-level propellant engineers.
  • Review and approve formulation and process documentation.
  • Represent the team in integrated product team settings and customer technical interchange meetings.
  • Contribute to independent research and development initiatives, white papers, and proposal technical volumes.
  • Help define and maintain the organization's composite propellant technology roadmap.
  • Assist with manufacturing and quality improvement processes.
  • Assist with facility design and build-out where relevant to the role's expertise.
  • Serve as a senior resource for explosive safety compliance.
  • Lead or support process hazard analysis, failure mode and effects analysis, and fault tree analysis for new propellant formulations and processing operations.
  • Maintain awareness of electrostatic discharge controls, friction and impact sensitivity protocols, and cook-off behavior relevant to tactical motor environments.
  • Participate in or lead mishap investigations and corrective action boards as required.

About the company

Singularity Defense makes affordable, scalable missile interceptors to counter inexpensive drones and munitions. It designs and builds subsystems in-house using commercial components to enable rapid testing and mass production, aiming for automotive‑style output rather than scarce, high‑cost interceptors. The team includes veterans from SpaceX, Tesla, Anduril, Lockheed Martin and Toyota, giving cross‑domain experience and a focus on high‑rate development compared with traditional defense suppliers. Its goal is to scale production for active conflict zones and broader U.S. demand, making effective interceptors more widely available.

What believers are saying

  • July 14, 2026 Series A raised $80 million at a $400 million valuation.
  • LA Business Journal reported production and testing up to eight times monthly.
  • September 23, 2026 hiring for drone pilots and manufacturing engineers shows scaling effort.

What critics are saying

  • No public contract awards exist, so revenue depends on winning Pentagon programs fast.
  • Interceptiors remain in development, leaving Anduril and Raytheon time to outspend.
  • If production slips, the $80 million round becomes a short runway before cash burn.

What makes Singularity Defense unique

  • In-house subsystems and commercial components cut supplier dependence versus legacy primes.
  • Automotive-style assembly and monthly flight tests target volume, not boutique interceptors.
  • July 14, 2026 launch, with Khosla, Felicis, and defense advisers, signals credibility.
