Requirements
  • Completion of a Surgical Technology program from a community college, or one year of experience within the last five years in a clinical or hospital-based gastrointestinal procedure unit or surgical procedure room setting, including assembling supplies and instruments, preparing procedure rooms, and participating as a member of the procedural team.
  • One year of experience in Gastroenterology or another gastrointestinal field is preferred.
  • BLS certification is required within 30 days of hire or before independent practice, whichever comes first, for positions involving patient care.
  • Knowledge of assembling supplies and instruments, preparing procedure rooms, and performing as a member of the procedural team.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to ride the tram daily.
  • Ability to arrive at OHSU within 30 minutes of being paged while on call.
Responsibilities
  • Review daily procedure schedules and provider and nurse preferences to anticipate needs.
  • Prepare procedure rooms with the required instruments, equipment, and supplies based on case requirements.
  • Verify the sterility, integrity, and functionality of instruments and supplies.
  • Ensure equipment is functioning properly before and during use.
  • Assemble and arrange equipment and materials for scheduled endoscopic procedures.
  • Assist providers by manipulating equipment during procedures as requested.
  • Hand instruments, equipment, and supplies to providers or nurses in response to their needs.
  • Follow hand hygiene and infection control protocols throughout procedures.
  • Monitor patient status and promptly report changes or complications to providers or nurses.
  • Support patient care alongside the endoscopy team before, during, and after procedures.
  • Operate and troubleshoot endoscopic equipment, including scopes, monitors, video systems, and electrocautery devices.
  • Assist in obtaining specimens during endoscopic procedures.
  • Preserve, collect, label, and transport specimens to the laboratory according to protocols.
  • Remove and transport used endoscopic equipment for cleaning, high-level disinfection, or sterilization.
  • Dispose of single-use and contaminated materials according to infection control and hazardous waste protocols.
  • Clean and decontaminate procedure rooms using hospital-approved disinfectants.
  • Prepare rooms with essential supplies for subsequent procedures.
  • Document procedure data in the patient medical record.
  • Record supplies and instruments used and report patient charges.
  • Clean and disinfect endoscopes and related instruments according to unit protocols.
  • Inspect, handle, and store scopes and equipment appropriately and report damage.
  • Maintain equipment in working condition and report malfunctions to the charge nurse or manager.
  • Troubleshoot minor equipment issues and coordinate complex repairs or servicing with Clinical Technology Services or external repair technicians.
  • Prepare instruments for sterilization, including packaging them for autoclaving, and receive processed instruments from Central Sterile Processing.
  • Perform and document routine safety and compliance checks.
  • Maintain stent logs, cleaning logs, and other required records.
  • Serve as the unit expert on endoscopic supplies, tools, and instruments.
  • Provide mentorship and support to new staff or colleagues unfamiliar with endoscopy equipment and protocols.
  • Stock procedure rooms and carts, monitor supplies for expiration, and communicate inventory needs.
  • Assist with restocking and reordering consumable supplies as directed.
  • Coordinate equipment sharing with other facilities, track returns, and arrange transportation logistics.
  • Prepare patients for endoscopic procedures and support their comfort, privacy, and understanding.
  • Provide pre- and post-procedure education and instructions and reinforce physician guidance.
  • Assist with medication preparation for administration by licensed personnel according to safety and verification protocols.
  • Perform gastric analysis, esophageal motility testing, gastric pH testing, CLO-test for Helicobacter pylori detection, and occult blood testing.
  • Assist with passing nasogastric, motility, and drainage tubes under physician or nurse direction.
  • Complete documentation and paperwork before, during, and after procedures, including patient data, supplies, implants, and procedural charges.
  • Assist with patient scheduling and conduct reminder calls as assigned.
  • Provide 24-hour call coverage once per week and one weekend of call every six weeks.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of experience as a gastrointestinal technician or scrub technician.
  • Familiarity with therapeutic procedures including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, endoscopic ultrasound, double-balloon enteroscopy, peroral endoscopic myotomy, endoscopic submucosal dissection, and endoscopic mucosal resection.
  • Familiarity with bronchoscopy procedures including bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound, and ION procedures.
  • Familiarity with endoscopy equipment including SpyGlass, Aloka/endoscopic ultrasound machines, and Olympus equipment.
  • Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates Gastrointestinal Assistant Certification.
