PhysicsX: AI beats humans in jet engine component design.

PhysicsX: AI beats humans in jet engine component design. September 02, 2026 NVIDIA-backed PhysicsX published research showing how its physics engineers use generative 3D AI to bypass CAD rules and reduce jet engine weight by 18.5% British startup PhysicsX describes itself as 'the physics AI company for industrials'. The firm recently raised US$300m at a US$2.4bn valuation. The company has published a blog that details how PhysicsX researchers adapted 3D AI foundation models using physics-guided diffusion loops to bypass traditional CAD constraints and automatically generate optimised engineering geometries. The researchers then demonstrated this by creating a jet engine bracket 18.5% lighter than top human designs. Almost every hard problem in the physical economy - better aircraft, better chips, better engines, better energy systems - comes down to how fast and how well engineers and machine operators can work through the underlying physics. For decades, that has been the binding constraint on hardware innovation. Jacomo Corbo, Co-Founder & CEO of PhysicsX Transforming jet engine design with AI. Most engineering workflows rely on parametric CAD, trapping designs within predefined parameters. PhysicsX engineers Daniel Owen-Lloyd and Sanmitra Ghosh note in a blog that 3D foundation models like TRELLIS.2 produce visual assets rather than functional engineering components. To bridge this, PhysicsX uses Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) to fine-tune these models on small datasets, generating physically meaningful variations even from a single bolt. To enable simulation, PhysicsX automatically repairs rough 3D geometries so production solvers run without crashing. Because standard solvers cannot directly guide AI generation, the team trains differentiable surrogate models as fast physics judges. These surrogates pair with an SDEdit diffusion loop that iteratively mutates candidate designs, keeping only the tweaks that pass the physics test. Validating the framework on the SimJEB titanium jet engine bracket benchmark, PhysicsX initialised its optimisation loop from the winning human design. The AI discovered a novel split-support geometry meeting all stress constraints while cutting weight by 18.5% without traditional CAD rules, proving generative 3D AI can expand the design envelope beyond human engineering limits. * Parametric CAD locks component design within rigid, predefined parameters * PhysicsX adapted 3D AI models using physics-guided diffusion loops * Fast surrogate physics judges guide AI generation without standard CAD rules * Researchers validated the generative AI framework on the SimJEB titanium bracket * AI beat top human designs, creating a jet engine bracket 18.5% lighter. The change PhysicsX is driving. Founded in 2020, PhysicsX describes its mission as accelerating hardware innovation by overhauling what industrial engineering and manufacturing look like. PhysicsX is building a new software stack to deliver deep physics AI enablement across the entire engineering lifecycle. The company partners with leading organisations in aerospace and defence, automotive, semiconductors, materials and energy and renewables, supporting them on some of the most critical and complex challenges. Jacomo Corbo, Co-Founder & CEO of PhysicsX, says: "Almost every hard problem in the physical economy - better aircraft, better chips, better engines, better energy systems - comes down to how fast and how well engineers and machine operators can work through the underlying physics. For decades, that has been the binding constraint on hardware innovation. "Physics AI removes it. AI Magazine is giving engineers the ability to explore thousands of designs where they once managed a handful, in seconds rather than weeks, across the most demanding industries in the world. "We are also enabling more reliable, more efficient and altogether new ways of doing engineering, manufacturing and production. This financing lets us put that capability in the hands of more engineers and push the frontier toward ever larger and more capable Large Physics Models." The democratisation of technology across industrials. Robin Tuluie, Founder and Chairman of PhysicsX, adds: "High-fidelity physics simulation has always been powerful, but it has also been slow, costly and the preserve of a small group of specialists. "Physics AI changes that in every dimension. It makes high-fidelity simulation dramatically more efficient, augments and improves on pure simulation results with ingestion of real-world data into its Large Physics Models and opens it to applications that were never practical before. "We believe in the democratisation of this technology to broad technical profiles across an industrial organisation - engineers, designers and operators who previously couldn't run these analyses themselves. As that capability spreads, its utility compounds across the business. That's the change we're driving." Key partners. PhysicsX's most recent funding round in June was led by Temasek, with participation from new investors M&G Investments and Intrepid Growth Partners, alongside existing investors including: * Applied Materials is a global leader in materials engineering, semiconductor manufacturing equipment and advanced display software. * Atomico is a prominent London-headquartered venture capital firm that backs European technology startups from Series A through growth stages. * General Catalyst is a global venture capital firm providing early-stage and growth capital to transformational technology companies. * July Fund is a New York-based venture capital firm focused on early- to growth-stage investments across deeptech, aerospace and enterprise software. * NGP is a global venture capital firm investing in growth-stage technology startups across industrial technology, cybersecurity and enterprise software. * NVIDIA is a global technology leader in GPU microchips, AI hardware infrastructure and accelerated computing platforms. * Radius is a venture capital firm focused on growth-equity investments across enterprise technology, deeptech and health sciences. * Siemens is a German multinational industrial technology and automation giant specialising in smart infrastructure, digital transformation and manufacturing solutions.
