  • Devices carry the growth: Abbott's device sales rose 8.4% on a comparable basis from April to June 2026.
  • Diabetes teams get a launch to build: FDA authorized Libre Duo, the first glucose and ketone sensor, in August 2026.
  • Abbott bought a cancer screening business: its roughly $21 billion Exact Sciences purchase closed in March 2026.

What critics are saying

  • Formula lawsuits linger: after a $670 million August 2026 settlement, about 1,700 suits over preemie formula remain.
  • Nutrition staff sit in a shrinking unit: Abbott's nutrition sales fell 3.6% comparably from April to June 2026.
  • Abbott's top product drew a severe recall: FDA flagged Libre 3 sensor errors linked to seven deaths in January 2026.

Abbott's whole-genome Oncodetect test boosts colorectal cancer recurrence detection sensitivity by 30%

Abbott said its whole-genome sequencing Oncodetect test detected colorectal cancer recurrence far more often than the whole-exome version. New Beta-CORRECT data presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology Congress showed a 30-percent absolute improvement in sensitivity within two years of surgery, using a single post-surgery blood draw. The test reached 72.2% sensitivity, against 42.2% for the earlier test. Among 157 patients tested with both, it found circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) in all 29 patients the older test caught, plus 15 more. Patients with detectable ctDNA after surgery had a 10.6-fold higher risk of recurrence. Two-year disease-free survival was 36.2%, versus 92.3% for ctDNA-negative patients. The study analysed samples from 279 patients, mostly with stage II and III disease. The test tracks up to 5,000 DNA variants unique to each tumour.

Abbott to spin off $8.5B nutrition business, with Similac and Pedialyte, by end of 2027

Abbott Laboratories plans to spin off its nutrition business into an independent company with about $8.5 billion in annual sales. Shares fell 3.9% to $98.44 in premarket trading. Daniel Salvadori, an executive vice president, will lead the new company, which will house the Pedialyte and Similac brands. Abbott shareholders would own shares in both companies. Abbott expects to complete the separation by the end of 2027. Afterwards, it would have sales of about $42 billion, focused on medical devices, diagnostics, and established medicines. The company has faced years of litigation over a baby-formula facility, including a $385 million settlement in September and a $670 million settlement in August.

Abbott posts lower 3Q profit, despite higher sales.

Abbott posts lower 3Q profit, despite higher sales. Published on 10/21/2026 at 08:33 am EDT By Connor Hart Abbott reported higher sales in the latest quarter, though profit fell as operating costs and expenses increased. The healthcare company on Wednesday posted a third-quarter profit of $920 million, or 53 cents a share, down from $1.64 billion, or 94 cents a share, a year earlier. Stripping out certain one-time items, earnings came in at $1.42 a share, in line with the expectations of analysts polled by FactSet. Net sales climbed more than 14%, to $13.01 billion, just topping Wall Street models for $12.99 billion. Sales across Abbott's nutrition business rose 5.1% to $2.26 billion. The company separately on Wednesday announced plans to carve out its nutrition unit into an independent company, housing brands such as Pedialyte electrolyte beverages and Similac infant formula. Diagnostics sales jumped 47% to $3.31 billion. Sales across the company's established-pharmaceuticals and medical-device businesses were up 6.8% and 6.9%, respectively. Total operating costs and expenses rose 25% to $11.66 billion, in part reflecting higher input costs as well as research-and-development spending. Chief Executive Robert Ford said the quarterly results reflect balanced growth across the company's portfolio. "With strong performance across multiple businesses and a robust pipeline of innovation, we are well-positioned to deliver sustainable growth in the years ahead," he added. For the year, Abbott expects adjusted earnings to come in between $5.50 and $5.55 a share on comparable sales growth of about 6%. The company had previously guided for adjusted earnings of $5.45 to $5.60 a share on comparable sales growth of 6.5% to 7.5%. The company additionally guided for adjusted earnings of $1.62 to $1.67 a share in the current quarter, compared with analyst views for $1.64 a share. Abbott confirms $8.5bn Nutrition spin-off, cuts sales outlook.

Abbott confirms $8.5bn Nutrition spin-off, cuts sales outlook. Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT) said on 21 October 2026 that it intends to separate its global Nutrition business into an independent, publicly traded company, carving out a unit with roughly $8.5bn in annual sales built around household names including Similac, Ensure, Pedialyte, PediaSure and Glucerna. The Abbott Nutrition spin-off is structured as a tax-free distribution of shares to existing Abbott shareholders, with completion targeted by the end of 2027. Daniel Salvadori, currently Abbott's executive vice president and group president for Established Pharmaceuticals and Nutritional Products, has been named chief executive of the new company, according to StreetInsider, which also reports the unit employs around 16,000 people across 14 manufacturing sites. The remaining Abbott, stripped of Nutrition, is projected to carry about $42bn in annual sales and roughly 106,000 employees, per Securities.io. A business that has been losing momentum. The pitch to shareholders is straightforward: freed of a slower-growing consumer unit, Abbott expects "accelerated sales growth and an expanded margin profile" on the diagnostics, devices and pharmaceuticals that remain. That framing sits awkwardly next to the Nutrition division's recent trading. Worldwide Nutrition sales came in at $2,144m in the second quarter of 2026, down 3.1% year-on-year, following an 8.9% reported decline in the fourth quarter of 2025 that prompted pricing actions, according to an exhibit filed with the SEC. Spinning off a business that has been shrinking is not unusual - it often lets the parent's growth rate look better by subtraction - but it does mean the new standalone company starts life with a sales trend to reverse rather than extend. The separation is not yet a done deal. It remains subject to regulatory approvals, the effectiveness of a Form 10 registration statement with the SEC, and final sign-off from Abbott's board, StreetInsider notes - the standard sequence for a US spin-off, but one that leaves roughly fourteen months of execution risk before shareholders actually hold stock in the new entity. Why the market shrugged, then sold. Investors did not treat the day as an unambiguous win. Abbott shares slid in premarket trading and kept falling into the session, dropping roughly 1.4% to 2% according to Investing.com, with the stock closing the day down 3.37% at $98.55. The reason wasn't the spin-off mechanics themselves but what accompanied them: Abbott simultaneously trimmed its full-year 2026 comparable sales-growth guidance to around 6%, down from a prior range of 6.5% to 7.5%, citing weakness in its medical device business, as Reuters reported. That guidance cut landed on the same morning as the third-quarter results underpinning it. Abbott's own release showed revenue of $13.01bn, up 14.5% on a reported basis and 7.0% on a comparable basis, with adjusted diluted earnings per share of $1.42 - in line with estimates - while the company held its full-year adjusted EPS guidance at $5.50 to $5.55. Investors, in other words, got a corporate restructuring story and a soft core-growth story in the same press cycle, and chose to price the latter. Precedent, and the cost of standing alone. This would be Abbott's second major separation in roughly a decade and a half. The company spun off AbbVie, its research-based pharmaceuticals arm, in January 2013, a transaction detailed in its fiscal 2012 annual report. That split ultimately let both businesses pursue distinct strategies - AbbVie as a branded-drug specialist, Abbott as a diversified health-products company - and investors will be watching whether the Nutrition carve-out follows a similar arc or struggles with the slower growth the segment has shown lately. The timing carries one more complication for a newly independent company likely to take on its own debt load: the 10-year US Treasury yield stood at 5.15% on 19 October 2026, up from 5.09%, according to Federal Reserve data. A standalone Nutrition company raising capital or refinancing in that environment faces materially higher financing costs than it would have a few years ago, a detail that rarely makes the press release but tends to show up in the first set of standalone accounts. Abbott's spin-off also joins a crowded run of 2026 portfolio break-ups, including National Fuel Gas's planned separation of its upstream and gathering business and Corteva's completed spin-off of its seed unit into Vylor Inc. For Abbott shareholders, the practical markers to watch are the Form 10 filing that will set out the new company's standalone financials, and whether the next quarterly print shows Nutrition's sales decline stabilising before the 2027 distribution date arrives. Abbott to spin off baby formula business

Abbott to spin off baby formula business. 21 Oct 2026, 08:18 pm Abbott Laboratories said is will spin off its nutrition and infant formula operations, allowing its healthcare-focused units in medical devices, diagnostics and established drugs to operate independently. (Oct 21): Abbott Laboratories said it plans to spin off its nutrition unit into a separate publicly traded company after a series of missteps have weighed on the company's broader performance. As an independent company, the nutrition business will "be better-positioned to focus its resources more strategically," Abbott said in a statement. The planned separation won't impact Abbott's guidance for 2026 or guidance it will provide in January for 2027, the company said. Daniel Salvadori, executive vice president and group president of established pharmaceuticals and nutritional products, will become chief executive officer of the new nutrition company. Abbott's shares fell 4% in pre-market trading on Wednesday. They have fallen more than 18% since the start of the year through Tuesday's close. The move will allow the company's healthcare-focused units in medical devices, diagnostics and established drugs to operate independently of the nutrition and infant formula operations that have had a number of issues in recent years. The challenges have included recalls that sparked a nationwide shortage in 2022. The separation, a tax-free distribution to shareholders, is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. The company's nutrition brands include Similac, Pedialyte and Ensure. The nutrition industry has proven difficult to navigate, with manufacturers grappling with costly recalls and mounting litigation. Abbott isn't alone in rethinking its exposure: rival Reckitt Benckiser Plc also sought to shed its Mead Johnson infant-formula business to focus on more high performing areas. Abbott lowered prices on some of its nutrition products at the end of last year to attract price-conscious consumers, after previously raising them to account for higher manufacturing costs. The company last month agreed to pay US$385 million (RM1.57 billion) to settle US allegations related to poor manufacturing practices at two facilities, including one involving an investigation of a contaminated facility that made powder infant formula. It also agreed to pay US$670 million in August to settle some lawsuits alleging that it hid the risk that its infant formula for premature babies can cause a deadly bowel disease.
