Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to acquire a Class A commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement within six months of hire; Sarasota County pays for it.
  • Ability and commitment to successfully complete the applicable one- or two-year training program.
  • Valid Florida driver's license at the time of hire.
  • Apprentice Skilled Trades Worker I requires two years of applicable trades experience, including water or wastewater collection work or pump, valve, or hydraulic system repair and maintenance with electrical troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Skilled Trades Worker II requires three years of applicable trades experience, including water or wastewater collection work or pump, valve, or hydraulic system repair and maintenance with electrical troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Ability to occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment substance screening.
Responsibilities
  • Gain hands-on experience through on-the-job training with an experienced technician.
  • Attend evening coursework through the STC Electrical Program.
  • Complete the self-paced Sacramento Lift Station Training Program.
  • Install, replace, repair, and modify mechanical and electrical equipment in Public Utilities facilities, including pumps, pump valves, regulators, actuators, control panels, communication systems, motor controls, electronic filtering, and switching systems.
  • Document and maintain work orders, parts inventory, and safety records.
  • Operate electric multimeters, voltmeters, megohmmeters, battery-operated tools, hand tools, chainsaws, and other gas-powered equipment.
  • Operate crane trucks to remove and install pumps from wet wells and perform other lift station maintenance activities.
  • Read and follow color codes, wiring diagrams, schematics, blueprints, plans, and written instructions.
  • Participate in required on-call work.
