About the job

Requirements
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including writing maintainable production code, reasoning about system architecture, and understanding testing, debugging, and operational reliability.
  • Substantive applied AI experience beyond basic model API integrations, with the ability to explain system architecture, tradeoffs, limitations, and observed behavior.
  • Ability to understand a new domain, identify important entities and relationships, and design software abstractions that reflect how its information is used.
  • Ability to test assumptions, measure results, investigate failure modes, and use evidence to guide technical decisions.
  • Ability to evaluate alternative approaches, recognize unnecessary complexity, and make appropriate technical tradeoffs.
  • Ability to discuss technical decisions with technical and non-technical stakeholders and domain experts.
Responsibilities
  • Design and implement agent architectures involving tool use, planning, orchestration, state management, and memory.
  • Develop context engineering strategies that balance relevant information, model capabilities, latency, and cost.
  • Decide when to use autonomous agents, explicit workflows, conventional algorithms, or combinations of these approaches.
  • Design tool interfaces and structured model interactions that support reliable, inspectable behavior.
  • Understand complex document collections and data sources, including their structure, semantics, authority, relationships, and scope.
  • Translate domain knowledge into effective retrieval systems, structured representations, and agent-accessible tools.
  • Apply information retrieval, information extraction, and knowledge modeling techniques to heterogeneous structured and unstructured data.
  • Design strategies for temporal relevance, provenance, conflicting evidence, and incomplete information.
  • Develop rigorous evaluations for AI-powered systems using representative datasets, human annotations, automated assessments, and targeted failure analysis.
  • Investigate system-level failures across retrieval, context construction, reasoning, tool execution, and final outputs.
  • Experiment with alternative architectures, models, and prompting strategies, using empirical results to guide decisions.
  • Help establish engineering practices for measuring and improving the reliability of agentic systems.
  • Develop reliable services and asynchronous workflows with attention to concurrency, fault tolerance, observability, and maintainability.
  • Integrate model inference, retrieval systems, and external data services into production applications.
  • Build and operate containerized workloads and cloud infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with engineers and domain experts to translate complex operational requirements into working systems.
Desired Qualifications
  • Substantial experience in one or more of agent orchestration patterns, planning and execution, tool-use architectures, persistent and transient memory, and context management.
  • Substantial experience in one or more of semantic and structured retrieval, information extraction, document understanding, entity and relationship modeling, and knowledge-driven tool design.
  • Substantial experience in one or more of evaluation methodology, benchmark and dataset construction, human and model-based assessment, statistical analysis, and systematic failure characterization.
  • Substantial experience in one or more of fine-tuning, model selection, inference serving, quantization, batching, and performance optimization.
  • Experience in aviation, aerospace, or another technically complex, safety-critical domain.
  • Experience in computational linguistics, natural language processing, information science, or knowledge representation.
  • Experience designing systems that reason over technical documentation, regulations, or heterogeneous operational data.
  • Experience developing or operating distributed, event-driven, and containerized services.
  • Experience building AI systems in which traceability, evidence, and human oversight are important.
  • Experience with Python, LangGraph, BAML, AWS Bedrock, PostgreSQL, pgvector, or event-driven AWS infrastructure is helpful but not required.

About the company

Beacon AI builds aviation technology by pairing pilots with an AI Assistant that improves flight safety and operational efficiency. The AI helps with checklists, configuration management, pilot safety systems, procedures, route optimization, and performance calculations, and fits directly into the cockpit workflow. Its leadership combines aviation industry experience and self-driving car software expertise, and its customers include airlines, government fleets, air charter operators, corporate flight departments, OEMs, and system integrators. The goal is to reduce risk and workload for pilots and to streamline operations across both commercial and private fleets using practical AI tools.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • January 2026 Air Force selection and April 2026 USSOCOM OTA expand Beacon's contract backlog.
  • Beacon raised $15 million in 2024, then won a $49.5 million USSOCOM prototype agreement.
  • Murdock hiring in June 2026 signals expansion, not contraction, across product and engineering teams.

What critics are saying

  • 13 defense contracts still leave Beacon dependent on government procurement cycles and program officers.
  • Commercial airline adoption lags defense wins, risking a long sales gap before scaled revenue.
  • Pilot-assistance software faces certification and liability scrutiny; one safety incident would cripple trust.

What makes Beacon AI unique

  • Beacon AI's Murdock and Lighthouse bundle cockpit assistance with mission planning, not just analytics.
  • January 2026 Air Mobility Command work targets operational airlift, validating dual-use aviation workflows.
  • April 2026 USSOCOM OTA includes a production clause, showing defense-grade trust and integration depth.
